Sourav Ganguly Slams Pakistan After India’s Asia Cup Win

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, widely regarded as one of Indian cricket’s finest players, harshly criticized Pakistan’s cricket team following India’s dominant win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 match on Sunday. Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Ganguly didn’t hold back, expressing disappointment over Pakistan’s decline in cricketing standards.

Switched to Manchester Derby Mid-Match

During the interaction, Ganguly revealed that he had initially started watching the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup clash but switched to the Manchester Derby — the English Premier League match between Manchester United and Manchester City — just 15 overs into the game.

He said, “Pakistan are no longer a competitive side now. I switched my TV sets to watch the Manchester Derby after the first 15 overs. I would watch India play Australia, England, South Africa, even Afghanistan, rather than watching Pakistan.”

Remembering Pakistan’s Glorious Past

Ganguly nostalgically recalled the golden era of Pakistan cricket, highlighting legends like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Javed Miandad, and Saeed Anwar. He expressed how the current Pakistan team stands in stark contrast to those past generations.

“There is no competition between India and Pakistan anymore,” Ganguly said. “I always say, we think of Pakistan as Waqar Younises, Wasim Akrams, Saeed Anwars, and Javed Miandads. But that’s not the case with modern-day Pakistan – it’s now like chalk and cheese.”

Emphasizing the quality gap, Ganguly stated, “Pakistan are no match. I say that with respect, it’s just because I’ve seen what their team was.” He added that India’s team has continued to perform impressively even in the absence of stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“This team has played without Kohli and Rohit, two pillars of Indian cricket for so long. India is simply far ahead of Pakistan and most of the Asia Cup teams.”

He concluded, “There will be one or two days when Pakistan performs well, but the majority of the time, India will be the better team.”

No Handshake Controversy: Ganguly Stays Neutral

Apart from the match itself, the absence of a post-match handshake between the Indian and Pakistani players became a major talking point. When asked for his opinion on the issue, Ganguly avoided taking sides and said the matter should be addressed by India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav.

“You’ll have to ask Suryakumar Yadav, he has already answered it. I’m too far, launching my ethnic brand,” Ganguly remarked. “Everyone has their own side of the story, that’s what it is.”

Sports Must Go On

Concluding his remarks, Ganguly sent a strong message: “Terror must stop, that’s most important – all around the world, not just India and Pakistan. But sports also cannot stop.”

His words reflect a call for sportsmanship and unity, while strongly criticizing Pakistan’s current cricketing standards and urging for an end to political tensions affecting sports.
