Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and acclaimed Tamil actor Vijay has strongly condemned the arrest of Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) during a protest march to the Election Commission in New Delhi. The demonstration, led by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, was organised to demand free and fair elections and to oppose the special intensive revision of Bihar’s voter list.
Speaking out on the issue, Vijay thalapathy emphasised that free and fair elections form the foundation of democracy. He stressed that the appointment of Election Commissioners should be made through consensus, ensuring the credibility and impartiality of the electoral process. The actor-turned-politician noted that his party, TVK, was the first political outfit from Tamil Nadu to raise concerns about the Bihar voter list revision, warning that it posed a direct threat to the democratic rights of citizens.
Vijay reminded the public that as early as December last year, he had cautioned that democracy could only survive if the Constitution was upheld and safeguarded. He reiterated that every citizen shares the responsibility of protecting democratic values, adding:
“It must be ensured that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner, in a way that inspires trust among all.”

Rahul Gandhi, leading the Opposition’s charge, has alleged that over one lakh fake votes have been added to the electoral rolls through multiple irregularities. According to him, these include duplicate entries, false and invalid addresses, bulk voters registered at a single address, mismatched or invalid photographs, and the misuse of Form 6 (used for adding names to the voter list).
The Congress leader has accused the Election Commission of not taking adequate action to address these alleged discrepancies. Furthermore, Gandhi refused the Commission’s demand for an affidavit under oath to back his claims, asserting that his statements as a sitting Member of Parliament — made after swearing on the Constitution — should carry enough weight.
While Vijay expressed clear support for the Opposition’s demand for electoral reforms and condemned the arrest of MPs, he did not address Rahul Gandhi’s specific allegations regarding the fake votes in Madhavapura. His omission on this sensitive issue has drawn attention, given that it forms a major part of the Opposition’s current campaign against the Election Commission.
Vijay’s Political Positioning Ahead of 2026

The statement from Vijay thalapathy comes at a politically significant time. With the 2026 Tamil Nadu state elections approaching, the actor’s transition into full-time politics is being closely watched. Known for his massive fan base across the state, Vijay is positioning TVK as an independent political force with a strong emphasis on governance reforms, transparency, and constitutional values.
Vijay thalapathy has made his political allegiances clear — describing the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as his “political enemy” and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as his “ideological enemy.” He has categorically ruled out any form of alliance with the BJP, whether direct or indirect.
However, his stance towards the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has been notably softer. Vijay has so far refrained from direct criticism of the party, leading to speculation in political circles that he may be leaving the door open for a potential alliance closer to the elections. Political analysts believe that such a move, if it materialises, could significantly alter the electoral arithmetic in Tamil Nadu.
A Calculated Silence?

Observers see Vijay’s silence on Rahul Gandhi’s 1 lakh fake votes allegation as a calculated political choice. While openly supporting the principle of electoral integrity and aligning himself with the Opposition’s call for reforms, Vijay may be seeking to avoid embroiling himself in contentious details that could alienate potential allies or segments of the electorate.
By focusing his remarks on broader democratic principles rather than specific charges, Vijay appears to be signalling that TVK’s politics will centre around systemic reforms rather than partisan disputes. This could be a strategic move aimed at positioning himself as a unifying alternative in the state’s highly polarised political environment.
Rising Public Profile
Since announcing his political debut, Vijay has adopted an issue-based approach, frequently commenting on matters of national and state interest. His criticisms of both the DMK and BJP have been sharp, particularly on governance and democratic norms, while his proposals for reforms — such as consensus-based appointments of Election Commissioners — have been presented as constructive alternatives.
This latest statement aligns with Vijay’s ongoing effort to frame himself as a defender of constitutional values and an advocate for citizens’ rights. His emphasis on free and fair elections resonates with voters who feel disillusioned by allegations of irregularities and mistrust in institutions.
The Road to 2026
With less than two years until the state elections, the coming months will be critical for Vijay and TVK. Political analysts suggest that his ability to translate his celebrity status into electoral success will depend on how convincingly he can present himself as a credible political leader rather than just a popular public figure.
Vijay’s potential alliances — or lack thereof — will also play a major role in shaping the political landscape. While his uncompromising stance against the BJP could consolidate anti-BJP votes, his position on the AIADMK will be watched closely for signs of collaboration or confrontation.
Meanwhile, his selective engagement with contentious national issues, such as the fake votes controversy, will continue to invite scrutiny. Whether this reflects political caution or a deliberate focus on long-term credibility remains to be seen.
For now, Vijay’s condemnation of the arrests in Delhi has reinforced his image as a defender of democratic rights, even as his silence on certain specifics leaves space for speculation. What is clear is that the actor-turned-politician is carefully crafting his entry into the political arena — balancing principle with pragmatism, and positioning himself as a fresh force in Tamil Nadu politics.
