The U.S. Open descended into chaos on Sunday (August 24, 2025) when a photographer walked onto the court during match point in Daniil Medvedev’s first-round clash with Benjamin Bonzi, causing a dramatic six-minute delay and sparking a furious outburst from the Russian.
Former champion Medvedev was eventually knocked out 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 by the Frenchman, who at one point threatened to leave the court and even called for Medvedev to be disqualified.
The drama began when Bonzi, serving for the match at 6-3, 7-5, 5-4, prepared to hit his second serve only for a photographer to step onto the playing surface. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth ruled that the Frenchman had to replay his first serve, triggering an explosive tirade from Medvedev.
You can't survive much longer in the game with this attitude.❌

“Are you a man? Why are you shaking?” Medvedev shouted as he stormed towards the chair. He mocked the umpire further, saying, “He wants to go home, guys. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.”

Medvedev Targets Umpire as Fans Disrupt Play
The Russian also repeatedly demanded, “What did Reilly Opelka say?”—referring to the American’s criticism of Allensworth after an earlier incident at the Dallas Open.
As jeers, whistles, and boos filled Louis Armstrong Stadium, play was suspended for nearly six minutes, with fans refusing to quiet down so Bonzi could resume serving. The USTA later confirmed that the photographer was escorted out by security and stripped of his credentials.
The interruption nearly turned the tide for Medvedev. He saved match point, broke back to 5-5, and then edged the tiebreak to force a fourth set. With momentum suddenly on his side, the 2021 champion dominated the next set 6-0 as Bonzi struggled and called for a medical timeout over a knee issue.

But despite the hostile atmosphere—some fans booed Bonzi during his service motion—the Frenchman regrouped in the decider. The pair traded multiple breaks before Bonzi, urged on by shouts of “Courage!” and “Allez!” from his player box, closed out the match with a stunning backhand winner. His racket in frustration as his opponent celebrated.

“It was crazy. Maybe I gained some fans today, maybe some non-fans too,” said world No. 51 Bonzi, who has now beaten Medvedev in all three of their Grand Slam meetings—each time in the opening round. “Thanks to all who were booing. Thanks for the energy. I’ve never experienced anything like that.”
With the defeat, Medvedev became the first former champion to exit this year’s U.S. Open, capping a miserable season at the majors where he advanced past the second round just once.
