Tourist Bus Carrying Indians Crashes on New York Highway, 5 Dead

A tragic accident on a New York state highway claimed five lives on Friday when a tourist bus carrying passengers of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino origin crashed after the driver reportedly became distracted. The bus, which was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls, veered off course and overturned east of Buffalo, leaving dozens injured and sparking a massive rescue effort.

The Crash

The accident occurred near Pembroke, around 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Buffalo, when the bus lost control on the highway. According to police, the driver became distracted, overcorrected, and the bus crashed.

While five passengers lost their lives, none of the other injuries were considered life-threatening. Authorities confirmed that several of the 54 passengers onboard received medical treatment and were later released.

Victims and Passengers

The passengers on the bus were primarily Indian, Chinese, and Filipino nationals, officials said. Thankfully, no children were killed in the accident, contradicting earlier police briefings that suggested otherwise.

Translators were dispatched to the scene to assist non-English speaking survivors. This step was critical in helping authorities and medical teams communicate effectively with the injured passengers and their families.

The scale of the accident prompted an extensive emergency response. Eight helicopters from Mercy Flight, a nonprofit provider of air ambulance services, were deployed to transport victims to hospitals.

Authorities confirmed that neither mechanical failure nor driver intoxication was a factor in the crash.

Official Statements

The tragedy drew immediate attention from New York officials. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that her office was coordinating with local authorities and state police to provide assistance to all affected.

“my team is working with state police and local officials who providing aid to everyone involved,”Governor Hochul said in a statement .

Senator Chuck Schumer, the senior U.S. senator from New York, expressed his condolences, thanking first responders for their swift action.

Meanwhile, Connect Life, a regional blood and organ donor network, issued an urgent appeal for blood donors, highlighting the critical demand following the crash.

The bus had traveled to Niagara Falls earlier in the day, a popular tourist destination on the U.S.-Canada border, drawing millions of visitors annually to its towering waterfalls. The group of tourists had spent the day sightseeing before starting their return journey to New York City.

The crash took place on a busy stretch of the highway as evening approached, cutting short what was meant to be a routine trip back home.

Investigation Underway

The New York State Police have launched an investigation into the crash, focusing on the driver’s moment of distraction. While initial reports rule out mechanical failure or intoxication, authorities are determined to piece together the full sequence of events.

The driver, who survived without major injuries, is cooperating with investigators. Officials said he would not face charges until the investigation is complete.

The incident has left a deep impact on both local communities and the international families of the victims. With passengers hailing from India, China, and the Philippines, foreign missions are expected to step in to assist families with consular support, including communication and travel arrangements.

The tragedy also underlines the risks of long-distance road travel in the U.S., particularly on highways frequented by tourist buses. Safety protocols, driver schedules, and monitoring for distractions are expected to come under renewed scrutiny in the wake of this crash.

The New York highway crash near Pembroke is a sobering reminder of how quickly a moment’s distraction can turn into a disaster. With five lives lost and dozens more affected, the tragedy has cast a shadow over what should have been a joyful tourist trip to one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders, Niagara Falls.
