Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The conversation, which was the second between the two leaders in a month, took place a day before PM Modi‘s scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the SCO summit in Tianjin. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, President Zelenskyy shared his views on the latest developments in Ukraine, while reiterated India’s consistent position that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve the conflict. Both leaders also shared updates on the call via social media.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that PM Narendra Modi thanked President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reiterated India’s consistent stance on a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, stressing support for all efforts aimed at the earliest restoration of peace.
According to the PMO, the two leaders also reviewed progress in the India–Ukraine bilateral partnership and explored avenues to further strengthen cooperation across areas of mutual interest.

Zelenskyy Seeks India’s Support for Ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged India to back an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, calling it essential for peace in the region. In a post on X, he said he had updated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his talks in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders aimed at achieving “real peace.” He also reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to engage in direct talks with Russia. “I thank the Prime Minister for his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” Zelenskyy added.
Zelenskyy further noted that Kyiv and New Delhi coordinated their positions ahead of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. “The end of this war must begin with an immediate ceasefire and silence. It is impossible to talk about peace while our cities remain under constant fire. India is ready to make the necessary efforts and deliver the right signals to Russia and other leaders during the summit,” he said.
Highlighting bilateral ties, Zelenskyy said he looks forward to meeting in person. “We also discussed our relations, upcoming exchanges of visits, and preparations for a Joint Intergovernmental Commission meeting. There is real potential we can unlock. I will be glad to meet the Prime Minister in the near future,” he stated

Modi-Putin Meet on SCO Summit Sidelines
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. On the sidelines of the event, he is set to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin — their first face-to-face meeting since U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff hike.
While the Russia-Ukraine conflict is expected to come up during the discussions, the primary focus will remain on strengthening bilateral ties. Earlier this month, the two leaders spoke over the phone, during which President Putin briefed the latest developments in Ukraine.

India Maintains Humanitarian Stance: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reiterated that India has consistently upheld a principled and humanitarian position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict — a stance he said is “equally appreciated” by both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He made the remarks in an interview with Japanese daily The Yomiuri Shimbun during his visit to Japan.

“India has maintained a principled and humanitarian stance on the conflict, which is equally appreciated by both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. In line with this, both leaders spoke to me to share their perspectives on recent developments. I reiterated India’s principled and consistent stand and encouraged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict,” the Prime Minister stated.
When asked about India’s role in peace efforts, Emphasized New Delhi’s readiness to contribute. “I have already indicated India’s willingness to support meaningful initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. I believe that, given our good relations with both parties and other key stakeholders, we can help strengthen global efforts toward the restoration of early and lasting peace in Ukraine,” he said.
