Picnic Tragedy in Karnataka: Six Swept Away at Dam, One Person Rescued

What was supposed to be a fun holiday picnic ended in tragedy on Tuesday when six people, including women and children, were swept away by strong water currents near the Markonahalli Dam in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district.

The Picnic That Turned Deadly

According to reports, around 15 people from Tumakuru had gone to Markonahalli Dam for a day trip to enjoy the holiday. The group consisted of family members and friends who wanted to relax by the water.

As the group gathered near the dam, seven people decided to step into the water for a short swim. However, their outing took a horrific turn when the siphon system at the dam suddenly released water, creating a strong and unexpected current downstream.

The sudden rush of water caught them off guard, and before anyone could react, all seven were swept away. Witnesses said the powerful current made it impossible for the others on the shore to reach or rescue them in time.

Swift Response from Police and Fire Teams

Local authorities were alerted immediately. Teams from the police, fire department, and emergency services rushed to the scene to begin rescue operations. Divers and rescue boats were deployed to search for the missing individuals.

Among the seven who were dragged away, one man, identified as Nawaz, managed to survive. He was rescued by local authorities and immediately taken to Adichunchanagiri Hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.

Search Operations and Recovered Bodies

Tumakuru Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok KV confirmed that rescue teams had managed to recover two bodies from the water by late evening. However, four others remain missing.

The search operation had to be temporarily halted on Tuesday night due to poor visibility and strong water flow. SP Ashok KV said that the search would resume early Wednesday morning with the help of additional rescue teams and equipment.

He also confirmed that all the victims, except Nawaz, are women and girls. The identities of the deceased and missing persons have not been released publicly as authorities are in the process of informing their families.

What Led to the Sudden Water Surge?

The Markonahalli Dam, located across the Shimsha River in Tumakuru district, is a popular weekend destination for locals. It was built to store and regulate water for irrigation and drinking purposes.

According to dam engineers, the tragic incident occurred due to a sudden natural increase in water flow downstream. The dam’s siphon system, which automatically releases excess water when the reservoir reaches a certain level, activated unexpectedly.

Officials believe that recent rainfall in the catchment area may have caused a sudden rise in water levels, triggering the siphon release. However, the exact cause of the siphon discharge will be investigated thoroughly by the irrigation department and local authorities.

Officials Promise Investigation

SP Ashok KV said that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine if there was any technical fault or negligence that led to the sudden water release.

“We are coordinating with dam engineers to find out whether the siphon release was an automated process or if any manual error occurred,” he told reporters.

He added that safety measures at popular picnic spots like Markonahalli Dam would be reviewed to prevent such tragedies in the future.

A Reminder of Safety Risks at Dams

Local residents and authorities have repeatedly warned that dams and reservoirs can be dangerous during certain times, especially after rainfall when water levels fluctuate.

Experts say visitors often underestimate the risks near such areas. Even a small release of water from a dam can create strong undercurrents capable of sweeping away people standing near the flow.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when visiting water bodies, particularly during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Warning signs and barricades are usually installed near restricted areas, but many tourists ignore them while trying to get closer to the water for photos or swimming.

Emotional Scenes at the Site

As news of the tragedy spread, families of the victims and local residents rushed to the spot. Emotional scenes unfolded as relatives waited anxiously for updates from rescue teams. Some broke down upon seeing the bodies recovered from the water.

Local villagers also joined the rescue efforts, assisting police and fire personnel by providing boats, ropes, and lighting support as night fell.

A Day of Mourning for Tumakuru

The heartbreaking incident has left the local community in shock. What was meant to be a joyful outing turned into an unimaginable tragedy for several families.

Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid venturing into restricted or deep-water areas near dams. Additional warning boards and security personnel are expected to be deployed at Markonahalli Dam following this incident.

As rescue operations continue, officials remain hopeful that the remaining missing persons can be found soon. Meanwhile, the district administration has assured that compensation and support will be provided to the affected families once recovery efforts are complete.

A picnic by 15 friends and family members at Markonahalli Da in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district ended tragically when a sudden release of water swept away seven people. Only one, Nawaz, survived. Authorities have recovered two bodies so far and will resume search operations for the remaining four. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the siphon release that led to this disaster.
