The Odisha government has launched an ambitious plan to upgrade the cricket stadium at Malimunda in Jharsuguda district into a state-of-the-art international-standard facility. With an estimated investment of ₹250 crore, the project is set to transform the stadium into a hub for multiple sports while raising Jharsuguda’s profile in India’s sporting map.
Australian Consultancy to Design the Stadium

To ensure global quality, the state government has engaged an Australian consultancy known for designing world-class sports arenas to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The project will officially begin once the DPR receives approval. Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy shared this development while inaugurating a new astroturf hockey ground at H. Kantapali on Thursday.
District Sports Officer Tushar Mishra added that the vision for the stadium extends beyond cricket. The upgraded facility will also include infrastructure for football, lawn tennis, and athletics, making it a multi-sport complex for the region.
A Dream Rooted in 2013–14
The idea of building an international-standard stadium in Jharsuguda was first proposed in 2013–14, when Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) allocated CSR funds for the project. Out of the 32 acres identified at Malimunda, 19 acres were earmarked exclusively for the stadium.
Initially, MCL sanctioned ₹8 crore, which was used for land development and building approach roads. However, over the years, the project costs escalated. In 2016–17, the estimated cost was revised to over ₹17 crore.
Recent Government Boosts
In recent years, the Odisha government has injected fresh funds into the project to keep the vision alive. In 2023, the state approved ₹10.35 crore for constructing a swimming pool and ₹5.34 crore for cricket infrastructure. Both facilities are currently under construction and will be integrated into the final cricket stadium project.
Present Condition of the Stadium
At present, the stadium’s first-phase gallery, built at a cost of ₹4 crore, provides only basic seating facilities. It does not meet national standards and lacks essential features such as chairs and spectator amenities. Experts believe that this gallery may need to be demolished and reconstructed entirely if the stadium is to match international benchmarks.
Challenges Ahead: Location and Floodlights

While the project is promising, certain challenges may limit its potential. The stadium’s proximity to the airport poses restrictions on installing tall floodlights. This could prevent hosting day-night matches, which are a significant attraction in modern cricket. Without floodlights, the stadium may primarily host day games, raising questions about its ability to draw high-profile matches.
A Multi-Sport Future for Jharsuguda
Despite the hurdles, the vision remains clear: to create a world-class sporting hub in Jharsuguda. The addition of facilities for football, tennis, swimming, athletics, and hockey will ensure that the complex serves a broader sporting community, not just cricket fans.

Local leaders and sports officials believe that this ambitious investment will not only benefit athletes but also boost tourism, employment, and infrastructure in the region. Jharsuguda, already an industrial hub, could soon emerge as a sports destination as well.
The planned ₹250 crore makeover of the Jharsuguda cricket stadium represents a major step forward in Odisha’s commitment to sports development. With the involvement of an international consultancy and a vision for multi-sport facilities, the project promises to transform the district’s sporting landscape. However, overcoming challenges related to international standards and infrastructure will be crucial for its success.
If executed as planned, the Malimunda stadium could soon stand as one of Odisha’s landmark sporting venues, symbolizing both progress and ambition.
