In a tragic incident at one of Odisha’s most scenic tourist spots, a young YouTuber went missing after being swept away by the strong currents at the Duduma waterfall in Koraput district. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Sagar Tudu, a resident of Berhampur in Ganjam district.

The Incident
According to officials, the accident took place on Sunday afternoon when Sagar was attempting to film reels with the help of a drone camera at the Duduma waterfall. He had arrived in Koraput along with his friend, Abhijit Behera, to record visuals of prominent tourist locations for his YouTube channel.
Witnesses said Sagar was standing on a large rock near the waterfall when disaster struck. At the time, the authorities of the Machakunda dam, located nearby, released water following heavy rainfall in the Lamtaput region. Though the dam authorities reportedly issued an alert for people living downstream, Sagar and other tourists at the waterfall were caught by surprise when the water level rose suddenly.
Within moments, the calm stream turned into a raging flow. Sagar, who had been focusing on capturing content for his channel, became stranded on the slippery rock. Eyewitnesses recounted that he struggled to keep his balance against the surging waters, but the force proved too powerful. Before help could reach him, he was swept away by the gushing current.
Rescue Attempts
Tourists and locals who witnessed the ordeal rushed forward in an attempt to rescue Sagar. Some even tried to reach him with ropes and sticks, but the water’s intensity made it impossible to intervene. Despite desperate efforts, the 22-year-old disappeared into the strong currents.

Soon after, police from Machakunda station and a team of Fire Brigade personnel were informed about the accident. Rescue operations were quickly launched, with officials scouring the waterfall and downstream areas. However, even after hours of search, Sagar could not be traced.
Authorities confirmed that the search operation would continue until further notice. “We are doing our best to locate the missing youth. The water flow is very strong, making rescue efforts difficult,” a local police official said.
A Popular Tourist Spot Turns Tragic
The Duduma waterfall, located on the Machkund River near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in southern Odisha. Known for its breathtaking height of around 155 meters, the falls attract nature enthusiasts, photographers, and adventure seekers.

While the beauty of Duduma is awe-inspiring, the site has also witnessed several accidents in the past due to its treacherous terrain and unpredictable water flow. Local residents often caution visitors against venturing too close to the rocks or edges, especially during the monsoon season when dam releases can cause sudden surges.
Unfortunately, despite warnings, the allure of capturing dramatic photos and videos often leads tourists and influencers to take risks. Sunday’s incident is another reminder of the dangers posed by prioritizing content over caution.
Who Was Sagar Tudu?
Sagar Tudu, the young YouTuber from Berhampur, had been steadily building a presence online. According to locals in his hometown, he was passionate about travel and videography, often visiting new places with his friend Abhijit to create engaging content for his channel.
His dream was to become a well-known content creator by showcasing hidden gems of Odisha to a wider audience. Friends described him as energetic, adventurous, and always eager to explore. The tragedy has left his family and well-wishers in deep shock.
Questions Over Safety
The incident has also raised concerns about safety measures at popular tourist spots. Many are questioning whether enough precautionary steps were taken before releasing water from the Machakunda dam.
Though officials maintain that alerts were issued downstream, there appears to have been little or no system in place to warn tourists and visitors at the waterfall itself. Local activists have urged authorities to install warning sirens, barricades, and proper signage near risky zones to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“Every year, accidents happen at Duduma. There should be a mechanism to ensure that tourists are alerted well in advance whenever water is released from the dam,” said a local resident.
A Tragic Reminder
As search operations continue, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks that come with adventurism in natural settings. While platforms like YouTube and Instagram have created a booming culture of travel vlogs and reels, the pressure to capture dramatic, unique content often pushes creators into dangerous territory.
For Sagar, what began as a creative endeavor to capture the beauty of Odisha ended in an unimaginable tragedy. His disappearance has not only devastated his family but has also left fellow creators shaken.
The authorities continue their efforts to trace the young YouTuber, but the chances of survival are slim given the intensity of the currents. Meanwhile, Duduma waterfall, which usually echoes with the laughter of tourists and the roar of cascading waters, now stands as the backdrop to a somber search operation.
