Odisha Vigilance Catches 2 BEO Staff in Sambalpur Taking ₹7,000 Bribe

In a major anti-corruption drive, Odisha Vigilance officials on Wednesday apprehended two employees of the Rengali Block Education Office (BEO) in Sambalpur district. The duo was caught for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹7,000, which they had taken as the first instalment of a larger demand of ₹25,000.

The operation highlights the state’s ongoing efforts to curb corruption within government offices, particularly in departments that directly affect teachers, students, and education administration.

Who Were the Accused?

The two accused have been identified as:

  • Dusmanta Kumar Sahu, Junior Assistant at the BEO office.
  • Gopabandhu Sahu, Peon at the same office.

According to vigilance officials, Dusmanta Sahu was in the habit of frequently seeking bribes from teachers and other staff in exchange for processing their legitimate claims such as salary, arrears, and official paperwork.

The Bribe Demand

In the present case, Dusmanta Sahu allegedly demanded ₹25,000 from a complainant. Out of this amount:

  • ₹7,000 was asked for processing the complainant’s regular salary.
  • ₹18,000 was demanded to clear arrear payments due to the complainant.

When the complainant expressed his inability to pay the entire sum at once, Sahu agreed to accept ₹7,000 as the first instalment. This created the opportunity for vigilance officials to intervene.

The Trap and Arrest

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Odisha Vigilance department laid a well-planned trap. During the operation, the peon Gopabandhu Sahu was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of ₹7,000 on behalf of Dusmanta Sahu.

The officials confirmed that the entire tainted money was recovered and seized in the presence of independent witnesses, following all legal procedures. This evidence now forms a key part of the case.

Searches for Disproportionate Assets

Following the successful trap, vigilance officers launched simultaneous searches at multiple locations linked to both accused employees:

  • Three locations connected to Dusmanta Sahu were searched.
  • One location linked to Gopabandhu Sahu was also raided.

The searches aim to identify disproportionate assets (DA) that may have been accumulated through corrupt practices. If found guilty of possessing DA, the accused could face additional charges.

A formal case has been registered against the two under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, specifically under Sections 7 and 12.

  • Section 7 relates to public servants taking undue advantage or bribes.
  • Section 12 pertains to abetment and involvement of others in such offences.

The investigation is currently in progress, and officials are gathering further evidence to strengthen the case.

Widespread Concern Over Corruption

The incident once again brings to light the problem of corruption in educational administration offices, where teachers and staff members often face pressure to pay bribes for getting even basic, legitimate services cleared.

For many educators, such practices create unnecessary financial and mental stress. Instead of focusing on their work, they are forced to deal with corrupt officials who exploit them.

Government’s Anti-Corruption Drive

The Odisha Vigilance has been actively conducting raids, traps, and surprise inspections across the state to crack down on corrupt practices. Over the past few years, several cases involving revenue, health, and education department officials have come to light.

The state government has assured that it will continue to take strict measures against those found guilty, regardless of their position. Such actions, officials say, are necessary to build public trust and ensure transparency in governance.

Local Reactions

The trap has been widely discussed in local circles of Sambalpur. Teachers and education staff in the district have expressed relief that action was taken against corrupt officials. Many have stated that this should serve as a warning to others indulging in similar practices.

Some also highlighted the need for stronger monitoring systems in offices like the BEO, where even low-ranking officials can misuse their positions to harass staff and extort money.

The arrest of the two BEO staff in Sambalpur is yet another reminder of the serious challenges posed by corruption in government offices. With the tainted money seized and further investigations underway, the vigilance operation marks a significant step toward accountability.

As the case progresses, it will not only determine the fate of the accused but also send a strong message that corrupt practices in Odisha’s education sector will not be tolerated. For teachers and staff members, this action brings hope that a more transparent and fair system can eventually replace the current climate of exploitation.
