A notable part of Niladri Bije is when Goddess Lakshmi closes the temple door to Lord Jagannath, protesting his journey without her. The world-famous Rath Yatra, the yearly chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra in Puri, Odisha, culminates with Niladri Bije. Celebrated on July 8th, 2025, which is the 13th day of the brilliant fortnight of Ashadha month, Trayodashi marks the successful return of the sibling deities to their home, the Shree Jagannath Temple, following their nine-day stay at the Gundicha Temple.
Festival of Love and Emotion

Following the Niladri Bije, ceremonial bathing known as Snana Purnima, the deities are thought to become unwell and are kept out of the public eye during the Anavasara period of seclusion that follows the Rath Yatra. The goddesses travel to Gundicha Temple, which is regarded as their aunt’s house, during the grand Rath Yatra procession. The Bahuda Yatra, or return journey, returns them to the area around the main temple after a stay of many days. The last chapter, Niladri Bije, is when they return to the Ratna Singhasana, or sacred throne.
The rituals of Niladri Bije are rich in symbolism and tradition. After a series of evening rituals on their chariots, the deities are escorted back into the temple in a ceremonial procession known as Pahandi. This unique procession involves carrying the deities in a swaying motion, accompanied by the resounding beats of cymbals, gongs, and the chants of devotees. The sequence of entry is significant:Niladri Bije In Lord Sudarshan enters first, followed by Lord Balabhadra, and then Devi Subhadra.
Mahalaxmi Enter the Lord Gagannath to Temple by Offering Rasogola

The Lakshmi-Narayana Kali is a charming and enchanting divine drama that marks the return of Lord Jagannath himself. According to legend, Lord Jagannath’s consort, Goddess Mahalakshmi, is unhappy even incensed that he abandoned her on his way to Gundicha Temple. Goddess Lakshmi symbolically blocks Lord Jagannath’s entry as he approaches the Jay Vijaya Dwar, the temple’s main gate. A lighthearted “tug-of-war” breaks out between the servants of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi. The iconic syrupy cheese balls RASAGOLA . This sweet offering, believed to have originated in the Puri temple over 500 years ago, eventually melts Goddess Lakshmi’s anger, and she allows him to re-enter the temple.

After completing the 9 day sojourn, today Lord Jagannath will enter in to Nilakandara, His permanent Abode in Puri dham of Odisha. He sets out from Ratnavedi, finishes his play at the Janmavedi at Sri Gundicha Ghara and then return on Bahuda Yatra to enter Nilakandara again today.After completing the Navadinanavi Yatra, Kalia Thakura will again be seated on the Ratnasinghasana of Srimandira today.
