Malayali Actress Navya – Wearing flowers in their hair is a cherished tradition for women in South India, especially during festive occasions like Onam. However, not every country shares the same sentiment when it comes to carrying flora across borders. Recently, Malayalam film actress Navya Nair faced a significant fine at Melbourne Airport in Australia for carrying a jasmine gajra during her trip.
The Incident at Melbourne Airport
Navya Nair traveled to Australia to participate in the Onam celebrations organized by the Malayali Association of Victoria. Her journey, meant to be a joyful experience celebrating culture, unexpectedly turned troublesome when she was stopped at Melbourne International Airport. Officials fined her over ₹1.14 lakh (AUD 1,980) for carrying a 15-centimeter-long string of jasmine flowers in her carry-on luggage.

During a public event, Navya explained the circumstances that led to this unintended mistake. She shared, “Before I came here, my father bought the jasmine for me. He cut it into two parts and asked me to wear one part in my hair during the journey from Kochi to Singapore and to keep the second part in my handbag so I could wear it from Singapore to Melbourne.” She added that she kept the jasmine in her carry bag, not knowing it was against Australian customs regulations.
Navya humbly acknowledged the error, stating, “What I did was against the law. It was a mistake I made unknowingly. However, ignorance is no excuse. Officials told me the fine must be paid within 28 days.” She expressed regret, noting that the fine was substantial, but accepted the responsibility, saying, “A mistake is a mistake, though it was not intentional.”
Cultural Clash and Strict Biosecurity Measures

Australia is known for its stringent biosecurity regulations, especially to prevent the introduction of foreign plant species that could disrupt the local ecosystem. Unlike India, where carrying flowers for personal adornment is common and culturally significant, Australia treats the entry of any plant material with great caution. Even a small string of jasmine is subject to strict scrutiny under Australian law.
Customs officers at the airport are tasked with protecting the country’s unique biodiversity from invasive species and plant diseases. Such rules apply to flowers, fruits, seeds, and other plant products. The fine imposed on Navya reflects the seriousness with which these regulations are enforced, even for travelers unaware of the law.
Onam Spirit Remains Unshaken
Despite the unexpected setback, Navya Nair remained in high spirits and continued her participation in the Onam celebrations. She shared a reel from the event, showing her involvement in the festivities, surrounded by other Malayali expatriates. Her enthusiasm reflected the joy of bringing the spirit of Onam to the diaspora, far from home.
A few days before her arrival in Melbourne, Navya posted pictures on social media from inside her flight. She was seen wearing a jasmine gajra in her hair, captioning the post: “Happy Onam. First-ever Thiruvonam in the skies! Though I miss being in naadu, carrying the spirit of Onam with me is a joy of its own. Work calls—and that too is another happiness. Onboard Singapore Airlines… Melbourne, here I come!”
Her post resonated with many, especially Malayalis living abroad, who often find creative ways to celebrate their traditions far from home. The Onam celebration in Melbourne was marked by traditional songs, dances, and feasts, bringing together the community in joyous harmony.

A Distinguished Career in Cinema

Lesson for Global Travelers
Navya Nair’s experience serves as an important reminder for travelers about the strict biosecurity laws in countries like Australia. Even something as culturally significant as carrying a small jasmine garland can lead to substantial fines if not declared or transported correctly. Her story highlights the need for awareness about international travel regulations, particularly when transporting plants or food items across borders.
Despite the fine and the inconvenience, Navya’s positive attitude and continued celebration of Onam underline her dedication to cultural pride and professionalism. Her experience is a valuable lesson to many that while tradition holds deep personal meaning, respecting global laws is essential during international travel.
