Landslide On Vaishno Debi Route- August 26–27, 2025- Intense monsoon rains unleashed widespread devastation across Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in severe flash floods, destructive landslides, and tragic loss of life. The most catastrophic incident occurred on the pilgrimage route to the revered Vaishno Devi shrine.

Tragedy at Vaishno Devi Route
On August 26, at approximately 3 p.m., heavy rain triggered a massive landslide near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya section at Adhkwari—a midpoint along the 12-km trek from Katra to the Vaishno Devi shrine. Rocks, boulders, and debris came hurtling down, engulfing pilgrims and infrastructure along the path.
As of August 27, the confirmed death toll stands between 30 and 32, with many more injured or feared trapped under the rubble.
In the wake of the disaster, authorities immediately suspended the Vaishno Devi Yatra. Rescue operations were swiftly mobilized, with teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, BSF, CRPF, and local volunteers deployed to assist. Special boats and heavy equipment were flown in, and canine squads were used to search for survivors.

This incident marks the third major rain-related calamity in J&K this month. On August 14, a cloudburst in Chositi, Kishtwar district, resulted in over 65 confirmed deaths, 300 injuries, and around 200 people missing On August 17, another cloudburst struck Kathua, killing at least four more individuals.
Jammu Kashmir Flooding and Infrastructure Damage

Rivers—including the Tawi, Chenab, Basantar, Ravi, Ujh, and Jhelum—have surged beyond danger levels. In particular, the Jhelum River at Sangam crossed the flood-alert mark, prompting major concerns downstream.
The torrential downpour—over 368 mm in Jammu in a single day—also damaged bridges and roads. The historic Madhopur bridge collapsed; vehicles were seen plummeting from it.
Rail services were disrupted with 18–22 trains cancelled or halted mid-route, stranding thousands . Mobile, broadband, and electricity services remain heavily disrupted across large areas of Jammu division, particularly where optical fiber lines were damaged
Response and Weather Alerts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered his condolences to the bereaved, pledging the Centre’s full assistance . Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah briefed him on the ground situation, emphasizing the growing death toll and stressing the need for preventive action in flood-prone areas.

The India Meteorological Department has issued urgent alerts for continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across J&K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and northeast states, urging citizens to remain vigilant. Beyond India, eastern Pakistan is also facing severe monsoon-related flooding.

Over 150,000 people have been displaced in Punjab province due to river overflows and water release from Indian dams. Islamabad’s evacuation efforts intensified following flood warnings shared by New Delhi. Scientists warn that climate change is escalating the frequency and intensity of such disasters, with emergency teams in both nations overwhelmed by the unfolding crisis.
