A disturbing incident involving an Indian woman being questioned by US police for allegedly shoplifting at a Target store has gone viral, drawing widespread attention online. The incident, which occurred earlier this year, showcases a video dated January 15, where the woman is seen visibly distressed, sobbing and struggling to breathe, while officers attempted to question her.
Woman Questioned by US Police
The video begins with an officer firmly informing the woman, “Right now you’re not free to leave.” Throughout the interaction, the woman appears overwhelmed, gasping and hyperventilating, prompting the officers to instruct her to take deep breaths in a calm tone. One of the officers is heard urging, “Do me a favour, take a big breath as deep in as you can. You gotta take a deep breath. Do not hyperventilate. Cause I gotta be able to talk to you, and I can’t talk to you with you breathing like that.”
When asked about her English proficiency, the woman admitted, “Not very good.” She later revealed that her primary language was Gujarati and confirmed her Indian nationality. Despite her distress, she declined the offer of an interpreter, stating that she did not require one.
As the questioning proceeded, police asked if she had any medical conditions, given her evident struggle to breathe properly. Meanwhile, store staff presented CCTV footage showing the woman pushing a shopping cart loaded with items past the checkout area without making any attempt to pay. One officer commented, “So she just put everything in the cart and then just walked past,” while a staff member confirmed, “Just walked straight out.”Indian Women Investigated for Target Shoplifting in the US

Spark Controversy in the US
During the interrogation, the woman disclosed that she held a Washington-issued driver’s license. Interestingly, the store staff mentioned that she was a regular customer at the Target store, but this was the first time she had allegedly engaged in shoplifting. The woman admitted to the police that her intention was to resell some of the items she had taken.
The officers informed her that she would need to appear in court regarding the shoplifting incident, a moment captured in the viral video that drew empathy and criticism from viewers alike.
This case was not isolated. In a similar incident in July of the same year, another Indian woman was investigated in the United States for allegedly stealing merchandise valued at approximately Rs 1.1 lakh from a Target store located in Illinois. In that instance, reports indicated that the woman had spent more than seven hours inside the store, selecting various unpaid items before attempting to leave.
Police bodycam footage from the Illinois case showed the woman apologizing repeatedly and offering to pay for the merchandise. She said, “I am really sorry to bother you if it is. I am not from this country. I am not going to stay here.” Her statement seemed to suggest regret and an acknowledgment of wrongdoing. However, a police officer responded sharply, “Are you allowed to steal things in India? I did not think so.”
After reviewing the transaction and security footage, authorities handcuffed the woman and transported her to the station for further investigation.

Sympathy, Criticism, and Debate Over Indian Women
These incidents have ignited discussions on social media platforms, with many expressing sympathy for the women involved, pointing out the possible cultural and psychological challenges faced by immigrants adjusting to life in a foreign country. Some viewers criticized the aggressive tone of the police officers, arguing that the lack of sensitivity towards the woman’s emotional and language difficulties aggravated the situation.
Others speculated about the underlying reasons that may have led these women to shoplift, highlighting economic pressures, mental health struggles, or a sense of desperation stemming from isolation in a foreign land. Several social media posts emphasized that neither incident should be generalized to portray all Indian immigrants, but rather seen as individual cases that deserve understanding and proper legal handling.
Legal experts weighed in on the matter, stating that regardless of nationality, shoplifting is a punishable offense under U.S. law. They explained that the process typically involves an investigation followed by court proceedings, where the accused has the right to defend themselves. However, they also stressed the importance of ensuring that the accused fully understands their legal rights, particularly when language barriers exist.

Meanwhile, advocacy groups for immigrants called for more compassionate treatment and better access to language support services during police interactions. They argued that providing interpreters and understanding cultural backgrounds should be standard protocol to avoid miscommunication and undue distress during such sensitive encounters.
As the videos of these incidents continue to circulate online, they serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by immigrants and the complex dynamics at play in cross-cultural legal matters. Both cases are reportedly ongoing, with the Indian women required to appear in court to respond to the charges.
This growing conversation underscores the need for empathy and fairness in dealing with immigrants accused of crimes abroad, as well as the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to handle such cases with professionalism and cultural sensitivity.
