In a bizarre incident that unfolded near Mount Abu, a group of tourists from Gujarat attempted a classic “dine and dash” but were caught soon after — thanks to a traffic jam and quick police action. The group’s plan to escape without paying a hefty restaurant bill of Rs 10,900 backfired spectacularly, turning their vacation meal into a cautionary tale.
The Lavish Meal That Led to Trouble
According to reports, five tourists — including a woman — checked into the Happy Day Hotel in Siyava, a small town near the popular hill station of Mount Abu in Rajasthan. The group appeared to be on a leisurely vacation, enjoying the scenic beauty of the region. After settling in, they ordered a lavish spread of dishes, indulging in a hearty meal that reportedly included a variety of local and continental delicacies.

The bill for their feast came to Rs 10,900 — a sum they decided not to pay. What followed was a poorly executed attempt to cheat the restaurant and make a quick getaway.
The “Restroom Trick” Gone Wrong
When it came time to settle the bill, the group tried an old and often-depicted tactic — leaving one by one under the pretext of using the restroom. One tourist excused himself first, followed by another, until all five had left the table. But instead of returning, they quietly made their way to their car parked outside.
Believing their escape plan had worked, they drove off in haste, heading toward the Gujarat border. However, the restaurant staff quickly noticed that their customers had disappeared without paying.
The Hotel Owner’s Quick Response
The hotel owner, suspecting foul play, immediately checked the CCTV footage. The footage clearly showed the group leaving the premises and getting into their vehicle. Without wasting time, the owner, accompanied by his staff, jumped into another car and began chasing them.
The car was spotted heading toward Ambaji, a town located at the Rajasthan-Gujarat border. The chase intensified as the group tried to speed away, but their escape was hindered by an unexpected obstacle — heavy traffic near the border.

As luck would have it, the tourists found themselves stuck in a traffic jam, unable to move forward. The hotel owner caught up to them within minutes and immediately alerted the local police. Officers from the nearby police station responded swiftly, intercepting the vehicle and detaining all five individuals.
When confronted, the tourists reportedly tried to talk their way out of the situation. Realising there was no escape, they eventually admitted to leaving without paying the bill. They contacted a friend and asked for an online money transfer to settle the dues. The payment was later confirmed by the hotel owner.
Social Media Buzz and Public Reaction
The unusual incident quickly went viral on social media after CCTV footage of the group’s failed escape was shared online. Users were both amused and shocked by the brazenness of the act, with many calling it “karma at work” for the group’s attempt to cheat a local business.

A Lesson for Tourists

Incidents like this highlight how seemingly minor acts of dishonesty can lead to serious consequences. What began as a fun vacation for the tourists ended in embarrassment and legal trouble. While they managed to avoid being formally charged after paying the bill, the incident serves as a reminder that integrity and accountability matter — even when on holiday.
The Happy Day Hotel owner later told local media that he hoped the tourists learned their lesson. “We work hard to serve our guests. It’s disappointing when people try to cheat us. But justice was served quickly,” he said.
As the story continues to spread online, it stands as a strange yet satisfying example of how quick thinking and teamwork between citizens and police can ensure fairness — even on the road.
