Gold Reserves Worth 1,996 Kg- The Odisha government has confirmed the discovery of nearly 1,996 kilograms of gold deposits spread across two districts of the state—Deogarh and Keonjhar. The revelation was made by the Minister of Steel and Mines, Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, in response to a question raised in the State Assembly.

Replying to Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Ashwani Kumar Patra, Minister Jena informed that surveys had confirmed gold deposits in two specific locations:
- Adas area of Deogarh district
- Gopur area of Keonjhar district
According to estimates, the Adas region in Deogarh holds around 1,685 kg of gold, while the Gopur region in Keonjhar has reserves of approximately 311.07 kg. Together, the total identified deposits amount to almost 1,996 kg of the precious metal.

Plans for Future Utilization
Minister Jena stated that the government is considering auctioning these gold deposits in the future for commercial exploitation. However, he emphasized that such a move would depend on economic and geological feasibility studies.
Before the auction process is finalized, experts will assess whether the mining of these reserves is financially viable and environmentally sustainable. The government’s decision will be guided by a balance between economic benefit and responsible resource management.
Role of Geological Survey of India
The discovery was the result of extensive exploration carried out by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in collaboration with the State Directorate of Mines and Geology.
The GSI, a central government agency responsible for mapping and assessing India’s mineral wealth, has been working in Odisha for decades. In this case, its surveys in Deogarh and Keonjhar provided vital data that confirmed the existence of significant gold-bearing zones.
This partnership between the state and central agencies has helped identify not only the presence of gold but also the quality and extractability of the ore in these districts.
Odisha’s Rich Mineral Belt

Odisha has long been known for its mineral wealth, particularly iron ore, coal, bauxite, and chromite. With the confirmation of gold deposits, the state’s resource map has expanded further.
Both Deogarh and Keonjhar districts are already part of Odisha’s mineral belt, contributing heavily to the state’s mining economy. The discovery of gold in these areas adds a new dimension to Odisha’s role in India’s mining sector.
Experts believe that if commercial mining is pursued, these deposits could attract significant investments and create local employment opportunities.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the excitement surrounding the discovery, several challenges remain. Gold mining involves complex extraction processes, which can be costly and require advanced technology. Additionally, mining projects often raise environmental and displacement concerns, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions.
The government will have to carefully weigh these challenges before moving forward with auctions. Ensuring community participation, fair compensation, and strict environmental safeguards will be crucial for the success of any mining project.

The confirmation of nearly 1,996 kg of gold deposits in Deogarh and Keonjhar marks an important milestone for Odisha’s mining sector. While the discovery has generated optimism about potential economic benefits, the next steps will depend on detailed feasibility studies and responsible planning.
If exploited wisely, these reserves could boost Odisha’s economy and position the state as a significant contributor to India’s gold resources. For now, the discovery remains a promising development that underscores the untapped potential beneath Odisha’s mineral-rich soil.
