Former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan, known for his principled stand and fearless voice in defense of democracy, has officially joined the Indian National Congress. His induction was announced at a press meet attended by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, who welcomed him to the party with a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Kannan Gopinathan was serving as the Secretary of Power, Urban Development, and Town & Country Planning Departments in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli when he resigned in August 2019. His resignation was an act of conscience — a protest against what he described as a “complete shutdown of democratic voices” following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

“Abrogating article 370 might be a decision of the government. but if you deicide to shut down an entire state, jail all journalists, MPs, and former CMs, shut down transportation, communication,and internet, then is it right? this is a questiton not just for me but for all of us. can this be right ina democratic nation?”
He added that his protest was not against the constitutional decision itself but against the undemocratic manner in which it was implemented.
