Former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan, known for his principled stand and fearless voice in defense of democracy, has officially joined the Indian National Congress. His induction was announced at a press meet attended by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, who welcomed him to the party with a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“we warmly welcome shri kannan gopinathan, former IAS officer and fearless voice for democracy, to the congress family,”venugopal wrote, sgaring a photo from the event.
Gopinathan’s entry into active politics marks a significant moment, as he has been widely respected for his integrity and for resigning from the Indian Administrative Service in protest against the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kannan Gopinathan was serving as the Secretary of Power, Urban Development, and Town & Country Planning Departments in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli when he resigned in August 2019. His resignation was an act of conscience — a protest against what he described as a “complete shutdown of democratic voices” following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Recalling the incident during the Congress induction event, Gopinathan reaffirmed his stance:

“Abrogating article 370 might be a decision of the government. but if you deicide to shut down an entire state, jail all journalists, MPs, and former CMs, shut down transportation, communication, and internet, then is it right? this is a questiton not just for me but for all of us. can this be right ina democratic nation?”
He added that his protest was not against the constitutional decision itself but against the undemocratic manner in which it was implemented.
” should voices not have been raised against this? i raised that question and i stand by it even today,” he said
His words resonated with many who viewed his resignation as a rare example of moral courage in Indian bureaucracy.
A Life of Service and Conviction

Born and raised in Kottayam, Kerala, Kannan Gopinathan completed his schooling in Puthuppally, a town known for its deep political and cultural heritage. He later pursued Electrical Engineering at the Birla Institute of Technology (BITS), Pilani, one of India’s most prestigious technical institutions.
After joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 2012, Gopinathan quickly earned a reputation for being an efficient and empathetic officer. He worked in various administrative capacities, often focusing on citizen welfare and development projects.
Despite his relatively short tenure in the service, his career was marked by a deep sense of public duty. His resignation letter in 2019 became symbolic of bureaucratic dissent — an act that emphasized principles over power.

Political observers believe Gopinathan could play a key role in shaping the Congress’ discourse on governance ethics, civil liberties, and institutional independence. His alignment with the party’s values could help bridge the gap between technocrats, young voters, and grassroots political movements.
K.C. Venugopal, while welcoming him, stated that Gopinathan’s inclusion represents a “reaffirmation of faith in democratic values and the idea of India.”
