Noida Dowry Horror: Woman Slapped, Burned Alive Over ₹36 Lakh, Says Son

In a harrowing case of dowry-related violence, a 28-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband and in-laws in Greater Noida after she failed to fulfill their demand for ₹36 lakh. The victim, identified as Nikki, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday while being shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.

The chilling incident was captured in disturbing videos that have since surfaced online, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stricter action against dowry harassment.

A Haunting Final Struggle

One of the videos shows Nikki, severely burnt, limping down a flight of stairs with flames still consuming parts of her body. Barely able to walk, she tried to escape the brutality inflicted on her. Tragically, hours later, she breathed her last while being transported from Fortis Hospital in Noida to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Eyewitnesses say that despite being critically injured, Nikki remained conscious for some time before collapsing. Her neighbors rushed her to the hospital after hearing screams and witnessing the horrifying assault.

Child Witnesses Mother’s Murder

Perhaps the most haunting testimony came from Nikki’s young son, who witnessed the crime unfold before his eyes. Fighting back tears, the little boy recounted what he saw:

“They first put something on mumma. Then they slapped her before setting her on fire using a lighter, he said, nodding silently when asked if his father had killed her.

The child’s statement, combined with video evidence, has left the community shaken, highlighting the unimaginable trauma inflicted on a minor who has now lost his mother to dowry violence.

Nine-Year Marriage Ends in Tragedy

Nikki had married Vipin Bhati, a resident of Greater Noida’s Sirsa, nine years ago. What began as a hopeful start to married life gradually turned into a nightmare. According to her family, persistent dowry demands from her in-laws made her life unbearable.

Her elder sister, Kanchan, who is also married into the same family, revealed the extent of the torture.

We were being tortured continuously. Our in-laws kept saying they didn’t get enough during the wedding. They demanded ₹36 lakh from our family. When we couldn’t provide it, they said we were better off dead,” Kanchan said.

She alleged that she too was assaulted by her in-laws on the same night Nikki was attacked, between 1.30 am and 4 am.

“I Saw My Sister Burn Alive”

In a heart-wrenching statement, Kanchan described how helpless she felt as her sister was set ablaze.

“I tried to save Nikki but I couldn’t. I saw her being burnt alive in front of me. They told me, ‘We got dowry for one, what about the other? We’ll marry again.’ They must suffer the same way they made my sister suffer,” she said, breaking down.

Two separate videos, now in circulation, confirm her claims. In one, Nikki is seen being dragged by her hair and beaten by her husband and mother-in-law. In another, she is shown sitting helplessly on the floor, her body charred by burns.

Police Action and Arrests

On the complaint of Nikki’s sister, a case has been registered at Kasna Police Station against four members of the Bhati family—her husband Vipin, mother-in-law Daya, father-in-law Satveer, and brother-in-law Rohit.

Vipin has been arrested, while police are conducting raids to nab the remaining accused. Officials have assured that the case will be fast-tracked and investigated thoroughly.

Senior police officers visited the area, promising justice for Nikki. A forensic team has also been deployed to gather evidence from the crime scene, including burnt household items and the lighter allegedly used in the attack.

Public Outcry: Justice for Nikki

The gruesome incident has triggered public anger across Greater Noida. A large number of people gathered outside the Kasna Police Station, demanding swift justice and harsh punishment for the accused. Many carried placards that read “Justice for Nikki”, echoing the outrage that dowry-related crimes continue to claim innocent lives in India.

Activists and women’s rights groups have also condemned the incident, calling it yet another reminder of how deep-rooted the evil of dowry remains, even decades after the Dowry Prohibition Act came into force.

Dowry Deaths in India

Despite strict laws, India continues to report thousands of dowry-related deaths each year. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 6,000 women die annually due to dowry harassment, often disguised as accidents or suicides.

In Nikki’s case, the brutality and evidence left little doubt about the crime. Her death has once again raised the question—why are women still paying the price for a custom that should have been eradicated long ago?

While Nikki’s family mourns their devastating loss, her young son faces a future marked by trauma and loss. Her sister Kanchan continues to demand justice not just for Nikki, but for every woman trapped in the vicious cycle of dowry harassment.

“We want the strictest punishment for them. No family should ever go through what we went through,” she said.

As the investigation continues, the haunting image of a woman engulfed in flames, stumbling down the stairs, will remain etched in the public’s memory—an unforgettable reminder of the urgent need to end dowry violence once and for all.
