Elderly Woman Breaks Down as 20-Year-Old Peepal Tree She Planted Is Cut Down

A heartbreaking video from Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district has gone viral, showing an elderly woman weeping inconsolably beside a Peepal tree she had planted and cared for over the past two decades. The emotional clip has struck a chord across social media, with thousands expressing anger and sorrow over the incident.

A Tree That Was Like Her Own Child

In the viral video, the elderly woman can be seen crying uncontrollably next to the stump of a freshly cut Peepal tree. According to villagers, she had planted the tree 20 years ago and treated it like her own child.

Every day, she watered it, offered prayers, and decorated it during festivals. For her and many others in the village, the Peepal tree was not just a plant — it was a symbol of life, devotion, and continuity.

When the tree was suddenly cut down, the woman broke down in grief, clutching its stump as she sobbed. Those who witnessed the scene said it was impossible not to feel her pain. “She cared for that tree like her own son. We all felt the same connection. Watching her cry broke our hearts,” said villager Suresh Kumar Tiwari.

Tree Felled Allegedly at Land Dealer’s Behest

The incident took place in Sarragondi village of Khairagarh subdivision, Rajnandgaon. Villagers allege that the Peepal tree was felled at the behest of a local land dealer named Imran Memon.

According to them, the tree stood on government land and was a site of local devotion where villagers often gathered to pray. Imran, they claim, wanted to clear the area as it was located opposite a plot he had purchased.

Villagers further alleged that Imran conspired with his associate, Prakash Kosare, to have the tree removed. The two reportedly used a wood-cutting machine to fell the tree under the cover of night.

Community Outrage and Police Action

Outraged by the act, villagers, led by Suresh Kumar Tiwari and Sanjay Singh, the former sarpanch of Sarragondi, went to the Khairagarh police station to demand strict action.

A villager named Pramod Patel filed an official complaint, prompting the police to register Crime No. 464/2025 under Sections 298 and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). An investigation was immediately launched.

During interrogation, Imran reportedly confessed to orchestrating the act. He told police that the Peepal tree stood on government land opposite his purchased plot, and he wanted to level the land for personal use.

Imran admitted that he watched as Prakash used a machine to cut down the tree. Afterward, both men fled to Khairagarh and allegedly threw the machine into a river to destroy evidence.

Police Recover Evidence and Make Arrests

The Khairagarh police began a search operation with the help of divers to locate the wood-cutting machine. A scooter belonging to the accused was also seized during the investigation.

Authorities later added charges under Section 238 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Defacement of Public Property Act. Both Imran and Prakash were arrested, produced before a court, and sent to judicial remand.

The local police assured residents that all necessary legal actions would be taken to ensure justice for the community and to prevent such incidents in the future.

A Community United in Grief

The villagers described the elderly woman’s sorrow as a reflection of their collective pain. The Peepal tree, they said, had been a part of their daily lives and spiritual identity.

Former sarpanch Sanjay Singh said, “This was not just a tree; it was a symbol of faith and the village’s devotion. Cutting it down was an emotional blow for everyone.

Many villagers gathered at the site, lighting incense sticks and offering prayers at the remains of the tree. For them, the act was not only a violation of nature but also of their cultural beliefs.

New Beginnings: A Symbol of Hope

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the residents of Sarragondi decided to turn their grief into action. They planted a new Peepal sapling at the same spot where the 20-year-old tree once stood.

The same elderly woman who had nurtured the original tree was among the first to offer prayers to the new sapling. Villagers have vowed to protect it collectively and ensure that no one dares to harm it again.

“This new tree will carry the same love and faith that the old one did,” said a villager. “It’s not just about replanting; it’s about healing a wound that affected our entire community.”

A Lesson on Faith, Nature, and Respect

The story from Rajnandgaon is more than just about a tree being cut — it’s a reminder of how deeply people can connect with nature and what it means to lose something they’ve cared for over decades.

As the video continues to circulate online, it has prompted widespread conversations about environmental respect, the need for stricter regulations on tree felling, and the emotional bonds that tie communities to their natural surroundings.

For the elderly woman, her tears were not just for a fallen tree, but for a part of her life that was taken away.
