Drug-Impaired Indian Truck Driver Causes Fatal Crash in the U.S., Killing Three

A 21-year-old Indian man, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, has been arrested in the United States for causing a deadly truck crash that killed three people in Southern California. Singh, an illegal immigrant, was reportedly under the influence of drugs when his semi-truck slammed into slow-moving traffic on a busy freeway in San Bernardino County, leading to a fiery collision that left multiple victims dead and several others injured.

The Fatal Crash

According to U.S. media reports, the tragic crash occurred when Singh’s Freightliner tractor-trailer plowed into a line of vehicles that had slowed down due to traffic congestion. Dashcam footage captured the horrifying moment the truck failed to stop before crashing into an SUV, triggering a chain reaction and explosion on the highway.

Authorities confirmed that three people were killed, and several others sustained serious injuries, including Singh himself and a mechanic who was assisting with a tire change on another vehicle at the time of the crash. The identities of the deceased victims have not yet been released.

Investigators said that Singh never applied the brakes before impact. Toxicology reports later confirmed that he was under the influence of drugs while driving. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that Singh showed clear signs of impairment at the scene.

“He was eventually transported to the hospital, checked out by medical staff, and our officers determined he was driving under the influence of drugs,” said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez, as quoted by ABC7 News.

Singh’s Immigration History

According to a report by Fox News, Jashanpreet Singh entered the United States illegally in March 2022. He reportedly crossed the southern U.S. border near California’s El Centro Sector, where he was initially detained by Border Patrol agents.

However, Singh was later released into the interior of the country under the Biden administration’s “Alternatives to Detention” policy. This policy allows certain migrants to remain in the U.S. temporarily while awaiting their immigration hearings instead of being held in detention centers.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Singh does not have lawful immigration status in the United States. Following his arrest, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency lodged an immigration detainer against him, meaning that federal authorities intend to take custody of Singh once his criminal case concludes.

Singh now faces several serious charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs causing death. If convicted, he could face decades in prison before being deported back to India.

Law enforcement officials have emphasized that this tragic case highlights growing concerns over unlicensed and unqualified drivers operating large commercial vehicles across the U.S. highways.

A Pattern of Similar Cases

This deadly crash has renewed debate about the rise of illegal immigrants obtaining or using commercial driver’s licenses in the U.S. In August 2025, another Indian immigrant, Harjinder Singh, was accused of causing a crash in Fort Pierce, Florida, that also killed three people.

According to reports, Harjinder Singh had entered the United States illegally in 2018 and later managed to obtain a commercial driver’s license in California, raising questions about loopholes in the system that allow undocumented migrants to operate heavy vehicles.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The crash involving Jashanpreet Singh has sparked outrage among local communities and reignited discussions about the Biden administration’s immigration enforcement policies. Critics argue that more stringent background checks and restrictions should be in place for immigrants seeking work in the commercial trucking industry.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol, along with the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, continues to investigate the case. Authorities are also reviewing Singh’s driving history, employment records, and the trucking company that hired him.

The victims’ families are demanding justice, calling for tougher laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The horrific crash caused by Jashanpreet Singh serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by impaired and unlicensed drivers on U.S. roads. As investigations continue, questions remain about how an illegal immigrant, previously released under federal supervision, was able to operate a commercial truck and cause a disaster that claimed three innocent lives.

This case not only exposes flaws in immigration enforcement but also highlights the urgent need for stricter monitoring of commercial drivers to ensure safety on America’s highways.
