Delhi Man Murders Wife and Mother-in-Law After Dispute Over Birthday Gifts

In a shocking case that has stunned the capital, a 34-year-old woman and her 63-year-old mother were allegedly murdered by the woman’s husband following a domestic dispute over birthday gifts. The incident took place in Rohini’s Sector-17, and police have since arrested the accused, identified as Yogesh Sehgal, for the brutal double murder.

Murder Triggered by a Birthday Dispute

According to investigators, the chain of events began on August 28, when Yogesh and his wife Priya Sehgal organized a birthday celebration for their young son, Chirag. Family members, including Priya’s mother Kusum Sinha, attended the function. During the course of the event, however, a dispute reportedly broke out between Priya and Yogesh regarding the gifts exchanged between the two families.

While such disagreements are usually minor, police believe this particular quarrel escalated into a heated confrontation, leading to growing tensions between the couple. Kusum decided to stay back at Priya’s home after the function, hoping to mediate and help resolve the conflict between her daughter and son-in-law.

The Grim Discovery

On August 30, Priya’s brother Megh Sinha, who lives separately, tried contacting his mother over the phone. When multiple calls went unanswered, he grew concerned. Around 3:50 pm, Megh visited his sister’s flat in Sector-17, Rohini. To his horror, he found the residence locked from the outside, with bloodstains visible near the door. Alarmed, he immediately contacted other family members and informed the police.

When the lock was broken open, Megh and police officers discovered the bodies of Priya and Kusum lying in a pool of blood inside a room. Both women had sustained multiple stab wounds, allegedly inflicted with a pair of scissors.

A PCR call was registered at the KNK Marg Police Station, after which senior officers and forensic experts rushed to the scene. The Crime Team and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) were also called in to collect evidence.

Accused Arrested; Weapon Recovered

Police identified Priya’s husband, Yogesh, as the prime suspect in the murders. Preliminary investigation revealed that he had fled the flat with his two children immediately after committing the crime.

Within hours, teams from KNK Marg Police managed to trace and arrest Yogesh. During his arrest, officers recovered blood-stained clothes and the pair of scissors believed to have been used in the killings.

Senior police officials confirmed that Yogesh, currently unemployed, had confessed to the crime during interrogation. They stated that the motive appeared to be a domestic dispute that spiraled out of control.

Family Speaks Out in Shock

The gruesome double murder has left the victims’ family devastated. Speaking to PTI, Priya’s brother Himalaya expressed his anguish and disbelief.

“My mother had gone to my sister’s house a day before and said she would return the next day. When we called her, she told us there was a fight between my sister and brother-in-law, and that she would help sort it out. But she never returned. The next morning, we kept calling her and my sister—at 11:00 am, 11:30 am, and again at noon—but neither picked up. We thought maybe they were resting. By the afternoon, we decided to check in person,” he said.

“When we reached the house around 3:30 pm, we saw blood stains near the lock. Once inside, we found my mother and sister lying soaked in blood. My brother-in-law had killed them and fled with the children. Who does this? Everybody has fights in marriage, they had been married for 17 years. But who kills their wife and mother-in-law like this? It is so inhuman,” Himalaya added, breaking down.

Community in Shock

The brutal killings have sent shockwaves through the Rohini neighborhood. Neighbors described Priya as a soft-spoken woman devoted to her children, while Kusum was remembered as a warm and supportive figure who frequently visited her daughter’s family.

Residents expressed shock at the crime, noting that while the couple did have occasional arguments, nobody had imagined such a violent outcome.

Police Investigation Underway

Senior officers from the Delhi Police said that while the initial investigation points to a domestic quarrel over birthday gifts as the immediate trigger, they are also probing whether there were deeper marital disputes or financial issues involved.

“The accused has been taken into custody. His statement and the evidence collected from the scene confirm his involvement. We are also recording the testimonies of relatives, neighbors, and others to build a clear timeline of events. Further forensic analysis will establish the exact sequence of the crime,” a senior officer said.

The police have assured that the two children, who were with their father when he fled the scene, are safe and in the custody of relatives. Efforts are being made to ensure their psychological well-being following the traumatic incident.

A Tragic Reminder of Domestic Violence

This case adds to the growing list of domestic violence-related crimes reported in Delhi and across India. Experts point out that disputes, often seen as trivial, can sometimes escalate into fatal confrontations if left unresolved or unchecked.

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, domestic disputes remain one of the most common triggers for violent crimes against women in India. Activists stress the need for stronger community awareness, counseling mechanisms, and timely interventions to prevent such tragedies.

As the investigation continues, the Rohini double murder stands as a grim reminder of how fragile family relationships can sometimes spiral into irreparable consequences. For the Sinha family, the tragedy has left a permanent scar—losing both a mother and a daughter in one shocking act of violence.

For the wider community, it highlights the importance of addressing domestic disputes with sensitivity, communication, and mediation rather than allowing anger and resentment to escalate unchecked.

Police have confirmed that Yogesh will be produced in court soon and charged with murder. The case is expected to draw close scrutiny, given its shocking nature and the senselessness of the motive.

As the family prepares to perform the final rites of Kusum and Priya, their grief is compounded by the circumstances of their deaths. A celebration meant to bring joy—the birthday of a young child—has instead ended in an unspeakable tragedy.
