The political climate in New Delhi has heated up once again, with reports suggesting that the Opposition’s INDIA bloc may move an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The development comes against the backdrop of widespread allegations of “vote theft” during recent elections, a charge that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly denied but which continues to be a rallying cry for Opposition parties.
According to multiple media reports on Monday, Congress leaders have indicated that the party is prepared to use every constitutional and democratic avenue available to challenge what they see as irregularities in the conduct of elections. Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain, speaking to ANI, underscored that while no formal discussion had yet taken place within the bloc, the option of impeachment could not be ruled out.
“If there is a need, we will use all the weapons of democracy under the rules. We have not had any discussions (about impeachment) as of now, but if needed, we can do anything,” Hussain said.
