Biker’s Reckless Ride- A tragic bus fire in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, early Friday morning claimed 20 lives and left dozens injured. New CCTV footage has now surfaced, showing the motorcyclist involved in the collision behaving suspiciously just moments before the crash, shedding light on the events that led to one of the deadliest road accidents in the region.
Reckless Riding Caught on CCTV
The footage shows B Shiva Shankar, 22, riding erratically on NH-44 shortly before his motorcycle collided with a private luxury bus operated by V Kaveri Travels. Preliminary reports suggest that the bike may have been ridden under the influence, leading to the devastating accident.

The video captures Shiva Shankar arriving at a petrol pump at 2:23 am with a pillion rider. With no attendant present, the pillion passenger briefly walks away, presumably to find someone to refuel the vehicle, while Shiva Shankar maneuvers around the pump. At one point, frustrated, he appears to scream before turning the bike around on its side stand and riding away, struggling to maintain balance.
Sources indicate that his erratic behavior raised suspicions among investigators that he may have been intoxicated. Viscera samples from the biker have been sent for forensic testing to detect alcohol or other substances, which could significantly influence the ongoing investigation.
The Deadly Collision
Around 3–3:30 am, the private bus, traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru with 46 passengers on board, collided with Shiva Shankar’s motorcycle near Ullindakonda. The impact caused the bus to burst into flames, dragging the motorcycle approximately 200 meters. Friction and fuel leakage from the bike reportedly ignited the fire, trapping passengers inside.
Out of the 46 people on board, 19 passengers died, most of them asleep at the time of the crash. 27 passengers survived by breaking windows and escaping the burning vehicle. The pillion rider is now in police custody and is being interrogated to reconstruct the chain of events leading up to the tragedy.
Driver and Bus Operator Under Scrutiny
Telangana minister Jupally Krishna Rao has blamed the bus driver and the travel agency for negligence. Both drivers, Laxmaiah and Siva Narayana, have been arrested and charged with careless driving.
Investigators are exploring multiple scenarios, including whether the motorcyclist caused the crash through reckless riding or if an earlier accident involving the bike went unnoticed by the bus driver in the dark and rain, resulting in the motorcycle being dragged and igniting the fire.
Safety Violations and Regulatory Red Flags
The bus operator, V Kaveri Travels, is under intense scrutiny for potential regulatory violations. Authorities revealed that the bus was originally registered in Daman and Diu and re-registered in Odisha last year, raising questions about attempts to evade higher taxes and stricter safety checks in other states.

These include emergency exit availability, gangway width, and structural integrity, all of which are crucial for safe evacuation during accidents.
Lack of Emergency Equipment
Survivors reported that mandatory emergency tools, such as mini hammers designed for breaking bus windows, were either missing or inaccessible. This likely contributed to the high fatality rate, as passengers were trapped inside the burning bus with limited means of escape.
The Investigation Continues

Police and multiple agencies, including the transport department, are continuing their investigation into the accident. The probe is expected to focus on several aspects: the motorcyclist’s potential intoxication, driver negligence, bus safety compliance, and operational practices of the travel agency.
As the investigation unfolds, the tragic incident has sparked renewed debate over road safety, regulatory enforcement, and the need for strict adherence to emergency protocols on Indian highways. Authorities have vowed stricter action to ensure such a disaster does not recur.
This horrific accident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by reckless driving, poor road conditions, and non-compliance with safety standards. It also emphasizes the importance of fully equipped emergency tools and properly trained personnel in private transportation services.
