Bengaluru Woman’s WFH Request After Mother’s Accident Sparks Unexpected Response

Bengaluru Woman’s WFH Request – A Bengaluru-based IT professional recently faced an unexpected and harsh response from her company after requesting to work from home (WFH) following a family emergency. The incident, shared on Reddit, has sparked widespread debate about the lack of empathy in Indian corporate culture and the challenges employees face when dealing with personal crises.

Family Emergency Sparks WFH Request

The situation began when the woman’s mother and uncle were involved in a scooter accident. Her mother suffered a fractured arm, while her uncle had swelling and bruising on his face and hand. Fortunately, there were no fractures apart from the mother’s arm.

The woman, who works in an IT firm in Bengaluru, requested to work from home for a month to care for her mother, given that she was unable to move or perform daily tasks. Importantly, she did not ask for leave — only the flexibility to work remotely.

“My mother-in-law and her brother had a scooter accident last week. She fractured her arm, and her brother’s face and hand are swollen and bruised; thankfully, no fractures,” the man who shared the story wrote on Reddit.

Company Denies WFH Despite Proof

Despite providing medical records, MRI scans, and even a police report as proof, the woman’s request to work from home was denied. The company reportedly justified the denial by citing “very little bandwidth in the team.”

The man explained, “They asked for proof — she literally sent them MRI scans and the police report. They even scheduled a meeting just to tell her no, saying they had very little bandwidth in the team.”

This rigid stance left the woman and her family frustrated, especially as her job did not require her physical presence in the office.

Impact on Family Members

The ordeal did not only affect the woman. Her mother’s brother, who was also injured, was allowed only two days off before being told to return to work. As he was still recovering, his younger brother had to take on the responsibility of dropping him off and picking him up from work daily.

The man highlighted, “It gets worse. Her brother — the one from the accident — was given only two days off and then told to come back to work. His younger brother now drops and picks him up every single day because he’s still in pain.”

Reddit Users Criticize Corporate Culture

The post quickly went viral, with Reddit users expressing outrage at the lack of compassion displayed by the IT company. Many shared similar experiences, reflecting a larger problem in corporate India where rigid policies often overshadow human empathy.

One user commented, “My brother had a freak accident where part of his finger was severed. He’s a sound engineer and was working in a recording studio. They wanted him to come back in ten days while he was still recovering from surgery. When he couldn’t, they laid him off. He’d been one of their star engineers. No employer is worth your health — you are irreplaceable to your family.”

Another user added, “Trash company. My company has a mandatory work-from-office rule, but in situations like these, of course, people get WFH. We as a society lack empathy. I feel for you and your family. We thrive on belittling others with whatever little power we have.”

The Broader Problem: Lack of Empathy in Corporate India

The Bengaluru woman’s experience has reignited discussions about the lack of compassion in Indian workplaces. Many employees face inflexible policies that prioritize work deadlines over personal emergencies, leaving them stressed and emotionally drained.

One user noted, “Sickening. I feel as a society we’ll have to make a U-turn towards building and running family businesses. Corporate culture has really weakened the status of the individual.”

Another user emphasized the struggles of work-life balance: “Bro, it’s even worse in law. You work 70–80 hours a week. Outside of work, sleep, and commute, I get about 25–30 hours total to eat, cook, clean, and do everything. It leaves no time for relationships with family or friends — and all that for less than Rs10 lakh a year.”

Rigid Policies vs. Employee Well-Being

This incident highlights a recurring problem in Indian corporates — the emphasis on rules and processes rather than human well-being. Employees often face moral dilemmas: prioritize work at the cost of family or risk being penalized for taking time off.

While some companies offer flexible WFH policies, many still cling to traditional office-centric models, showing little understanding for emergencies. The Reddit post underlines the emotional toll this can take, not only on the employee but also on their family.

The Need for Change

Stories like these serve as a reminder that corporate policies need to evolve to reflect empathy and compassion. Flexible working arrangements, emergency leave, and understanding managers can make a significant difference in employee morale and mental health.

For now, the Bengaluru woman’s experience has opened a larger conversation about the balance between professional obligations and personal responsibilities, shining a light on the urgent need for a humane approach in corporate India.
