Bengal Teacher Assaulted on CCTV After Objecting to Public Drinking

An incident in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district has sparked outrage after a school teacher was brutally assaulted for objecting to public drinking in a residential neighbourhood. The attack, which took place in Belgharia on Saturday night, was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation from residents and political leaders alike.

The Incident

The victim, identified as Nirupam Pal, an arts teacher, was returning home after attending a wedding ceremony when he noticed a group of youngsters drinking openly on a roadside in Belgharia. Concerned about the nuisance in a residential locality, Mr. Pal confronted them and asked them to refrain from consuming alcohol in public.

What followed was shocking. According to his complaint, the group of young men and women turned hostile and began to abuse him. The argument escalated quickly, and several of them physically attacked him, slapping and punching him repeatedly. The sudden violence left the teacher bleeding and shaken.

Local residents who witnessed the incident rushed to his aid and rescued him from the assailants. However, before leaving, the group allegedly threatened to kill him if he dared to protest again.

Family’s Ordeal

The teacher’s family has expressed fear and anger over the incident. His nephew, Rony Paul, described the horrifying call he received that night.

“I was asleep when my uncle phoned me. He was terrified and said that he had been attacked. He told me eight men and one woman were drinking openly near the road. When he told them not to drink in public in broad daylight, they pounced on him. They slapped and punched him so hard that his nose started bleeding. We are deeply worried because they even threatened to kill him,” Rony said.

The family also highlighted how such public drinking episodes have become a menace in their neighbourhood, making residents feel unsafe.

CCTV Footage Exposes the Assault

CCTV footage from the locality has provided chilling evidence of the assault. The video shows three men and a woman mercilessly raining blows on Mr. Pal. The teacher, visibly overpowered, is seen shielding his face with his hands in an attempt to protect himself.

One individual from the group appears to intervene and tries to restrain the attackers, but his efforts go in vain as the beating continues. The footage has strengthened the case against the accused and sparked widespread discussion on the lawlessness of public drinking and the safety of those who protest against it.

Police Action

Following the complaint filed by Mr. Pal, the police launched an investigation and quickly arrested five individuals in connection with the case. Authorities have assured the community that strict action will be taken against all those involved.

A senior police officer confirmed that further investigations are underway and more arrests could follow if additional culprits are identified. “Public safety is paramount, and such acts of hooliganism will not be tolerated,” the officer stated.

Hospitalisation and Recovery

Mr. Pal sustained multiple injuries during the assault and was admitted to a local hospital for treatment. Doctors reported that he had nosebleeds and bruises across his face and arms but was stable. He has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Despite his physical recovery, the emotional trauma of the attack lingers. Neighbours and well-wishers have rallied around him, praising his courage to stand up against anti-social behaviour in the locality.

Political and Community Reactions

The assault has triggered a strong reaction among political leaders and community members. Local MLA and Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra expressed solidarity with the teacher, urging residents to come together against such unlawful behaviour.

“We are all with him. Everyone should protest against this menace. Drinking in public spaces cannot be tolerated. Earlier, we used to keep vigil in localities at night to prevent such activities. We will resume this practice after consultations with local councillors,” Mitra said.

The MLA’s comments have resonated with residents, many of whom have demanded stricter enforcement of laws to curb public drinking and ensure neighbourhood safety.

Broader Issue of Public Drinking

The incident has once again highlighted the growing problem of public drinking in urban and semi-urban parts of West Bengal. Residents complain that roadside liquor consumption often leads to altercations, harassment of passersby, and a general sense of insecurity in residential areas.

While state laws prohibit drinking in public places, enforcement often remains weak. This gap allows groups to gather on streets and consume alcohol openly, creating a nuisance for families and children living in the vicinity.

Local activists argue that unless authorities increase patrolling and impose heavier penalties, such incidents will continue to rise.

A Teacher’s Courage Sparks a Movement

What makes this case particularly significant is that it involves a teacher—someone regarded as a custodian of values and discipline in society—who stood up against unruly behaviour. Instead of backing down, Nirupam Pal chose to confront the group and remind them of basic civic responsibility.

His assault has angered the community, but it has also inspired many to speak up about the growing culture of public drinking and intimidation. Residents in Belgharia have pledged to keep a closer watch in their locality and extend support to the victim.

The brutal attack on arts teacher Nirupam Pal is not just an isolated act of violence—it is a wake-up call for authorities and citizens alike. It underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement against public drinking and better protection for those who dare to speak up.

As police continue their probe and community leaders pledge vigilance, residents hope that justice will be swift and decisive. For now, the solidarity shown towards Mr. Pal stands as a testament that law-abiding citizens will not remain silent in the face of such intimidation.
