In a major crackdown against corruption, the Assam Police arrested senior Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora on Monday for allegedly accumulating wealth far beyond her declared income. The arrest follows a series of raids conducted by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell, which uncovered cash and valuable assets at multiple locations linked to the officer.
Massive Cash and Gold Seized During Raids
The Special Vigilance Cell carried out simultaneous raids at the Guwahati residence of Nupur Bora and her rented house in Barpeta. Officials recovered Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery valued at nearly Rs 1 crore from her Guwahati home. Additionally, Rs 10 lakh in cash was seized from her Barpeta residence.

Nupur Bora, originally from Golaghat, joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019 and was posted as a Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district at the time of her arrest. Her rapid accumulation of wealth raised serious suspicions, prompting authorities to place her under surveillance for the past six months.
Allegations of Land Fraud and Corruption
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Nupur Bora had been under close watch following complaints of her involvement in controversial land dealings. It is alleged that during her tenure at the Barpeta revenue circle, Bora transferred Hindu land to dubious individuals in exchange for monetary gains. These illegal transactions reportedly involved manipulating official records and misusing her authority as a revenue officer.

“There is widespread corruption in revenue circles, especially in minority-dominated areas,” Mr. Sarma stated. “We have taken strict action against Nupur Bora after gathering substantial evidence of her involvement in corrupt practices.”
Involvement of Alleged Aide
The investigation also led the Special Vigilance Cell to raid the residence of Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, who serves as an official in the Barpeta revenue circle office. Deka is accused of colluding with Nupur Bora to illegally acquire multiple land properties across Barpeta district. Authorities believe the duo worked together systematically, exploiting their positions to amass wealth by transferring lands to favored individuals for personal profit.
Both Nupur Bora and Lat Mandal Surajit Deka are now in police custody as investigations continue. The authorities are examining property records, financial transactions, and other documents to build a solid case against them. The state government has vowed to pursue a strict anti-corruption stance and to bring all such corrupt officials to justice.
Strong Message Against Corruption
This high-profile arrest sends a strong message that no government official, regardless of rank, will be allowed to misuse power for personal gain. The Assam government’s Special Vigilance Cell remains committed to probing further cases of corruption, particularly in sensitive revenue administration sectors.
The Chief Minister urged whistleblowers and concerned citizens to come forward and report any evidence of malpractice by public servants. “We aim to establish a transparent and accountable administrative system where public interest is always the priority,” Mr. Sarma added.

As the investigation progresses, further developments are expected, including potential action against other individuals involved in the illegal land transfer racket. The state administration is determined to clamp down on corruption and restore public trust in its governance.
