Arvind Kejriwal Requested Mayawati’s Delhi Bungalow but Was Allotted a Different One Instead

Nearly a year after vacating the Chief Minister’s residence, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has finally been allotted an official bungalow in Delhi. The decision comes after proceedings in the Delhi High Court, where Kejriwal had sought suitable accommodation as the national president of a recognised political party.

Kejriwal Gets Type-VII Bungalow at Lodhi Estate

According to official sources, Arvind Kejriwal has been allotted a Type-VII bungalow at 95, Lodhi Estate. These bungalows are reserved for senior leaders and high-ranking officials in the government. The AAP leader reportedly visited the new residence on Monday to inspect the property.

Type-VII bungalows are known for their spacious layouts and premium amenities. They typically feature four bedrooms, large lawns, a garage, servant quarters, and office space. Spread across approximately 5,000 square feet, Kejriwal’s new residence includes two side lawns and an attached office.

Interestingly, Kejriwal will now have Congress MP Shashi Tharoor as his neighbour, who occupies bungalow number 97. Other nearby residents include Army officials in bungalows 94 and 96, while RJD’s Misa Bharti and Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra live close by, at bungalows 82 and 81 respectively.

AAP’s Request for Mayawati’s Bungalow Declined

The Aam Aadmi Party had earlier requested the central government to allot 35, Lodhi Estate, a bungalow previously used by BSP chief Mayawati, for Kejriwal’s use. However, the request was turned down because the property had already been allocated in July to Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.

As a result, the urban development ministry informed AAP that an alternative residence at 95, Lodhi Estate would be provided instead. The official communication about the allotment reached Kejriwal on Monday, ending months of uncertainty about his accommodation status.

No Permanent Residence Since September 2024

Arvind Kejriwal has been without a permanent government residence since stepping down as Delhi’s Chief Minister on September 17, 2024. Following his resignation, he vacated his official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road on November 4, 2024, and temporarily stayed at the home of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Ashok Mittal, located at 5, Ferozeshah Road.

Earlier, the central government informed the Delhi High Court that Kejriwal would be allotted a suitable government bungalow within ten days, in keeping with the privileges extended to presidents of national political parties. However, the process took almost a year due to bureaucratic delays and allotment conflicts.

Old CM Residence to Be Converted Into State Guest House

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has decided to repurpose Kejriwal’s former CM residence at 6, Flagstaff Road. The property, which underwent extensive renovation during his tenure as Chief Minister and later came under scrutiny over alleged corruption charges, will now be converted into a state guest house. Plans also include setting up a cafeteria on the premises.

The new allotment at Lodhi Estate finally puts an end to the year-long uncertainty surrounding Kejriwal’s official residence. For the AAP leader, who continues to play a crucial role in national politics, this marks a return to stable accommodation in the heart of the capital — among some of India’s most prominent political figures.
