“Adam Sandler Swings Again in Happy Gilmore 2 — With Mixed Results”

Adam Sandler Swings Again in Happy Gilmore 2

Happy Gilmore 2 Running time : 114 minutes | Rated PG -13 (language, crude humor , partial nudity, thematic material) |stre aming on Netflix

It’s oddly perfect that Happy Gilmore 2  landed on Netflix.

Though the original 1996 comedy didn’t exactly dominate theaters (finishing 38th that year), it found cult status through cable reruns and home viewings. With endlessly quotable lines like “The Price is Wrong, b—h!” and “Tap tap taparoo,” Adam Sandler’s wild, juvenile energy turned Happy Gilmore into a beloved ’90s staple.

So does the world need a sequel almost 30 years later?

Probably not. But here we are — and surprisingly, it’s not a total disaster.

The new film isn’t as funny as the original (did anyone expect it to be?), and it definitely could’ve shaved off 20 minutes. Still, it’s warmer than anticipated, with Sandler fully committing to his lovable man-child persona in a way only he can. And unlike many lazy comedy sequels, it puts in a decent effort. Happy Gilmore 2.

Co-written by Sandler and longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy, the script leans hard into nostalgia — practically replaying the entire 1996 movie — while adding a slightly darker twist.

“Happy’s Return: More Stars, Less Substance”(Happy Gilmore 2)

We learn that Happy’s glory days gave way to personal loss. He’s now a single dad, stuck working in a grocery store, drinking too much, and dealing with the absence of wife Virginia (Julie Bowen returns, briefly). But when his daughter Vienna (played by Sandler’s real-life daughter Sunny) dreams of a ballet school in Paris, he dusts off his golf clubs for one last shot at glory.

Plot-wise, it’s thin. There’s an absurd subplot involving a flashy new PGA rival called Maxi Golf — maybe a jab at LIV Golf — but it never quite lands. And with more celebrity cameos than the Oscars, the film feels bloated.

Seriously, try turning “spot the celeb” into a drinking game and you’ll black out before the halfway mark. Jon Lovitz, Eminem, Bad Bunny (yes, rubbing honey on Travis Kelce in a bizarre fantasy scene), and actual golf legends like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler all pop in and out like it’s an SNL skit on steroids.

Some OG cast members return: Christopher McDonald’s Shooter McGavin (fresh from an asylum), Ben Stiller’s twisted Hal, and Kevin Nealon. But the swarm of newcomers barely gets screen time before vanishing — the constant carousel of A-listers gets old fast.

And let’s be real: watching Happy chase another title doesn’t have the same underdog charm. Sandler’s signature rage — hilarious in his youth — feels more like midlife angst now. Less Billy Madison, more Manchester by the Sea…..   with punchlines.

Still, Happy Gilmore 2delivers just enough nostalgia and absurdity to keep fans entertained. But let’s not push our luck. Leave The wedding Singer , Billy Madison , and The Waterboy alone.
