Bengaluru Domestic Worker Caught on Camera Killing Pet Dog in Apartment Lift

In a shocking case of animal cruelty, a domestic worker in Bengaluru was arrested after she was caught on CCTV slamming a pet dog to death inside the lift of a residential apartment. The horrifying incident took place on Friday in the Bagalur area of north Bengaluru and has since triggered widespread anger on social media.

CCTV Footage Reveals Shocking Act

According to police reports, the accused, identified as Pushpalatha, was working as a caretaker for a four-year-old pet dog belonging to a resident of the apartment complex. The CCTV footage from the building lift captures the entire incident, leaving viewers horrified by its brutality.

The video shows Pushpalatha entering the lift with two dogs on a leash. As the elevator doors close, she suddenly pulls the leash of one of the dogs and slams the animal violently onto the floor. The small dog appears motionless immediately after the impact.

When the lift doors open, the other dog walks out calmly, unaware of what happened, while Pushpalatha is seen dragging the lifeless body of the dog outside the lift. The CCTV evidence later became the key piece of proof in the case.

Employer Shocked After Seeing the Video

The dog’s owner, who had hired Pushpalatha to take care of her pet, said she was devastated after seeing the footage. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the owner had employed Pushpalatha on September 11, agreeing to pay her a monthly salary of ₹23,000 to feed, walk, and care for the dog.

After being informed about the sudden death of her dog, the owner initially questioned Pushpalatha, who denied any wrongdoing. Unsatisfied with her response, the owner requested the apartment management to check the CCTV footage from the lift. What the footage revealed was both shocking and heartbreaking — the worker deliberately slamming the dog to the ground, causing its instant death.

Police Register Case for Animal Cruelty

Once the video evidence surfaced, the dog owner filed a formal complaint at the Bagalur Police Station. The police registered an FIR under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and arrested Pushpalatha soon after.

Confirming the arrest, a police official said, “The accused has confessed to the act during questioning. We are investigating to determine the motive behind her behavior.” The officer added that the incident has deeply disturbed the residents of the apartment complex and that further investigation is ongoing.

Public Anger and Outrage Online

The disturbing video quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting widespread outrage among animal lovers and citizens. Many users demanded strict action and harsher penalties under India’s animal cruelty laws, arguing that current punishments are too mild to deter such acts.

Several animal rights activists and organizations have also stepped in, calling for justice for the dog and better protection for pets in domestic care. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has reportedly contacted local authorities to ensure that the case is pursued seriously.

Growing Concern Over Pet SafetY

This incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of pets left in the care of hired workers or boarding facilities. Many pet owners in Bengaluru have since expressed fear and sadness, emphasizing the need for background checks and monitoring before hiring domestic help to handle animals.

Experts suggest installing CCTV cameras inside homes and common areas to ensure accountability and prevent such horrific acts from going unnoticed. Apartment associations are also being urged to conduct strict verification of staff and caretakers who interact with pets.

Call for Stronger Animal Protection Laws

Animal welfare advocates have used this case to highlight the urgent need for stronger animal protection laws in India. The current Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, provides minimal penalties — often just fines — for acts of abuse or cruelty. Activists argue that the law must be amended to include stricter punishment, including jail terms, to prevent such crimes.

As the investigation continues, Bengaluru residents and animal lovers across the country are demanding swift justice for the innocent dog that lost its life so cruelly.
