A tense hostage situation in Mumbai’s Powai area ended dramatically on Thursday when Rohit Arya, the man accused of taking 17 children hostage, died after being injured in a brief gunfire exchange with the police. The standoff, which lasted about two hours, unfolded inside a small film studio where Arya had lured the children under the pretext of a web series audition.
The Hostage Drama in Powai
According to the Mumbai Police, the incident began around 1:45 pm when a distress call alerted officers that several children were being held hostage inside RA Studios, located on the ground floor of a residential building in Powai. The children, aged between 8 and 14 years, were attending what they believed to be an acting audition.

Police teams from Powai Police Station quickly reached the spot and began negotiations with Rohit Arya, who refused to release the children. Witnesses reported hearing shouting from inside the studio as officers tried to calm him down.
When Arya threatened to harm the children, the police decided to intervene. According to officials, Arya fired at the police using an air gun, prompting officers to respond with a single round of live ammunition. The bullet struck Arya in the right side of his chest.
The police then stormed the premises through a side entry connected to the bathroom and successfully rescued all 17 children unharmed. Arya was immediately rushed to Hiranandani Hospital, where he died during treatment. His body has been sent to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police Recover Air Gun and Chemicals
After the rescue operation, investigators searched the scene and recovered an air gun and several chemical containers that Arya had allegedly used to threaten the police and create panic. Forensic teams are analyzing the materials to determine if they were harmful or part of a larger plan.
Officials said Arya appeared mentally disturbed and had been frustrated with government authorities over a payment dispute. They believe this frustration led him to plan the shocking act.
What Rohit Arya Said in His Video
Before the incident, Rohit Arya had posted a disturbing video online, explaining his motive. In the clip, he said:
“i am rohit arya. instead of dying by suicide, i have nade a plan and am holding some children hostage here.”
He claimed that his act was not for money or terror but to make “simple, moral, and ethical demands” and raise certain “questions.” Arya warned the authorities not to make any wrong move, saying it would “trigger him” to set the place on fire.
“i don’t want money i am not a terrorist. i want simple conversation , i have held them hostage as part of a plan. if i live, i will continue it , if i die someone else will,” he said in the video.
The footage quickly went viral after the incident, showing a visibly agitated Arya expressing anger at government officials for not fulfilling their promises.
His Dispute With the Government
Police sources revealed that Arya had previously claimed the Maharashtra Education Department owed him ₹2 crore for his work on a sanitation awareness campaign under the Chief Minister’s ‘My School, Beautiful School’ (My Shala, Sundar Shala) project.
Arya said he had been working on a cleanliness initiative since 2013, known as the ‘Let’s Change’ campaign, aimed at turning schoolchildren into “ambassadors of cleanliness.” He alleged that despite completing his part of the project, the department had not paid him since January 2024.
In his social media posts, Arya mentioned going on two hunger strikes earlier this year to demand payment and claimed that then Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar had personally assured him help. According to Arya, Kesarkar had issued him two personal cheques of ₹7 lakh and ₹8 lakh, promising further support that never came.
Government’s Clarification
However, Maharashtra Education Secretary Ranjit Singh Deol refuted Arya’s allegations. In a statement, he said, “There was no agreement to pay Rohit Arya ₹2 crore. He volunteered for the project and was given a certificate of appreciation for his work.”

The Mumbai Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, including Arya’s background, mental health, and social media activity. They are also questioning people connected to his campaign and studio.
The rescued children are safe and have been reunited with their families. Authorities have praised the police team for their quick action, which prevented a potential tragedy.
In summary, the Powai hostage crisis ended with the death of Rohit Arya, who held 17 children captive inside a Mumbai studio. While his grievances with the government appear to have fueled his actions, police say his decision to endanger innocent children was both tragic and unjustifiable. Fortunately, all the children were rescued unharmed, bringing the tense standoff to a close.
