Maharashtra on alert as Cyclone Shakti approaches; IMD warns of heavy rainfall across Mumbai

Maharashtra is on alert as Cyclone Shakti approaches. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected, with rough seas along the northern coast. Fishermen are advised to stay ashore, says IMD.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday announced that the season’s first cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea has strengthened into Cyclone ‘Shakti’ — a name assigned by Sri Lanka. Currently located about 300 km west of Dwarka and 360 km west of Porbandar, the cyclone is expected to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm later today.

According to the forecast, the cyclone is expected to stay offshore while intensifying over the next two days, potentially bringing rainfall to parts of Maharashtra.

Which regions are under alert, and how intense are the expected winds?

Meteorologists have placed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg under alert, with wind speeds expected to range between 45–55 km/h and gusts reaching up to 65 km/h along the North Maharashtra coast from October 3 to 5.

Sea conditions continue to be very rough, with turbulent waters expected along the northern Maharashtra coast through October 5. Maharashtra on alert, Fishermen have been strongly advised to stay ashore and refrain from venturing into the sea.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across Maharashtra’s interior regions, especially in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada. Intense cloud formation and rising atmospheric moisture may also lead to flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan.

What steps has the government taken in response?

In response to Cyclone Shakti, the Maharashtra government has issued preparedness directives. District authorities have been instructed to activate disaster management protocols, ready evacuation plans for residents in coastal and low-lying areas, issue public advisories, restrict sea travel, and implement safety measures during heavy rainfall.

Residents are urged to plan travel cautiously, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during downpours, and stay updated on municipal alerts regarding flooding or road closures.
