A 20-year-old student’s death by suicide at Sharda University’s hostel in Greater Noida has sparked outrage and protests on campus, with fellow students and the victim’s family accusing university staff of mental harassment and negligence. The student, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) second-year student, was found hanging in her hostel room on July 18. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
Greater Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sudhir Kumar confirmed the incident. “Yesterday, a girl student of Sharda University died by suicide in the university hostel. Police received the information, reached the scene promptly, and ensured a swift postmortem was conducted,” he said.
The student’s family alleges that the tragedy was the result of continuous mental harassment by university faculty. Her relatives claim she was falsely accused by her professors of forging signatures on assignments and lab work. According to them, the accusations were made publicly in class, where she was also humiliated and threatened with failure.
Her brother, speaking to ANI, shared details of the week leading up to the suicide. “This began a week ago when a professor accused my sister of forging signatures. My father went to the campus on Monday to discuss the issue with the professor and the Head of Department. On Thursday morning, he spoke to my sister, but after that, we received no response from her,” he said. “Later, her batchmates told us she had been humiliated in class. Faculty members even said she was an expert at forgery and threatened to fail her.”
victim Family Accuses Faculty of Harassment
The family insists the mental trauma caused by these allegations and threats pushed the young woman to take the extreme step. As news of her death spread, protests erupted on campus with students demanding accountability and action against the staff involved. They joined the victim’s family in calling for justice and a thorough investigation.
An FIR has been registered against five university staff members, and the case is now under active investigation. Police are examining the allegations of harassment and any possible lapses by the university administration.
The incident has raised serious concerns about student mental health and faculty conduct in academic institutions, especially in high-pressure professional courses.
