A major tragedy struck Tamil Nadu’s Karur on Sunday when a massive crowd gathered for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally. What should have been a political show of strength turned into chaos, ending in a stampede that killed 41 people, including 18 women and 10 children.
Police reports and eyewitness accounts paint a disturbing picture of poor planning, mismanagement, and political drama that followed.

According to the FIR , the rally was scheduled to begin at 9 AM, with Vijay expected to address the gathering by noon. However, the popular actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief arrived only at 7 PM—seven hours late.
Police allege that Vijay intentionally delayed his arrival to create “unnecessary expectations” among the crowd. His campaign bus made multiple unscheduled stops along the route, turning the journey into an unapproved roadshow that disrupted traffic and stretched the crowd’s patience.
Crowd Mismanagement and Fatal Collapse
By 11 AM, a huge crowd had already gathered at the venue, but with no food, water, or basic facilities, tensions grew as the hours passed. Despite warnings from police, TVK leaders, including Vijay and senior member N. “Bussy” Anand, ignored the risks.
As the evening dragged on, TVK workers broke through police barriers in their eagerness to see Vijay. Some even climbed onto a tin-roofed shed to catch a glimpse of him. The roof collapsed under their weight, triggering panic and chaos that led to the deadly stampede.
Political Blame Game Begins

The tragedy immediately spiraled into a political controversy.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) accused Vijay’s party of violating crowd safety rules. In contrast, the TVK claimed the stampede was part of a conspiracy orchestrated by DMK. TVK leaders filed a petition in the Madras High Court demanding either a special investigation team or a transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
TVK lawyer Arivazhagan told NDTV, “There was a criminal conspiracy in the incident at Karur. We didn’t violate police conditions.” He pointed to TVK’s other rallies in Madurai, Trichy, and Namakkal that were held without major problems.
The DMK, however, refrained from escalating the war of words. Party spokesperson Dr. Syed Hafeezullah urged people not to believe or spread rumors. “The law will take its course,” he said in a statement on X.
TVK’s Accusations Against Police
Apart from blaming the DMK, TVK leaders also criticized the police. Party leader Aadhav Arjun filed a petition repeating allegations of conspiracy and accusing the police of mishandling the situation.
He claimed the electricity was cut off during Vijay’s speech, causing panic. He further alleged that anti-social elements in the crowd threw stones, ambulances drove recklessly into the gathering, and police used lathi charges, all of which worsened the chaos.
However, the Electricity Department denied any power cuts, stating the supply was uninterrupted. They clarified that the disruption happened only to TVK’s own generators and focus lights as the crowd surged.
Police Defend Their Deployment
The Tamil Nadu police rejected allegations of negligence. Davidson Devasirvatham, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), said the event had been classified as “high-risk”, and 500 personnel were deployed to manage the 25,000-strong crowd.
However, nearly 27,000 people turned up, making control difficult. “We couldn’t even move the injured through the crowd. Even Vijay himself could not be taken out,” he admitted.
The officer compared the chaos to a recent AIADMK rally in Karur, where only 137 police were deployed, but no problems occurred because it was an “orderly crowd.”
Financial Aid for Victims’ Families
The 41 people who lost their lives include 18 women and 10 children. Their families will receive multiple layers of financial compensation:
- ₹10 lakh each from the Tamil Nadu state government
- ₹20 lakh each from Vijay’s TVK party
- ₹2 lakh each from the central government, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
The relief package, though significant, cannot compensate for the loss of lives caused by what many see as avoidable mismanagement.
A Tragedy That Could Have Been Prevented

The Karur stampede has once again exposed the dangers of mixing politics, celebrity, and poor crowd control. Vijay’s delayed arrival, unapproved roadshow, and failure to provide basic facilities combined to create a volatile situation that spiraled into disaster.
As investigations continue, questions remain about whether the tragedy was the result of political rivalry, negligence, or both. What is clear, however, is that 41 families are left grieving, and the incident will cast a long shadow over Vijay’s political journey as his TVK prepares for its electoral debut in next year’s Assembly elections.
