Odisha has taken a significant step toward strengthening its medical education and health care system with the launch of two new government medical colleges and the appointment of 135 faculty members across the state. These developments are part of the state’s broader strategy to expand access to quality healthcare while nurturing the next generation of medical professionals.
Two New Medical Colleges Begin Operations
In 2025, the state inaugurated the Government Medical College & Hospital at Phulbani in Kandhamal district and the Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital at Talcher in Angul district. With the addition of these two institutions, Odisha now has 14 government-run medical colleges, ensuring that medical education and healthcare services reach underserved regions of the state.

Officials emphasized that these new colleges will not only provide better opportunities for aspiring medical students but also strengthen healthcare delivery in interior and industrial belts. The government aims to reduce the gap between urban and rural healthcare facilities through these expansions.
Strengthening Faculty Cadre Across Odisha
To further boost teaching and clinical services, the Odisha government recently inducted 91 Assistant Professors in 23 broad specialty subjects and 7 Assistant Professors in 6 super-specialty disciplines. These appointments will directly enhance the quality of education at leading institutions, including:
- SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack
- MKCG Medical College, Berhampur
- PGIMER and Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar
In addition, the Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC), Cuttack, has welcomed 10 super-specialist Assistant Professors, strengthening oncology education and treatment facilities.
Promotions to Enhance Academic Excellence
Alongside fresh appointments, the state government has promoted 38 Professors and 27 Associate Professors across various medical institutions. These promotions are designed to recognize experience and academic contribution while ensuring a strong leadership pipeline in Odisha’s medical education sector.
By balancing new inductions with internal promotions, the government is building a robust academic and clinical workforce capable of addressing the growing healthcare needs of the population.
Expanding Access to Quality Healthcare
According to officials, these initiatives are aimed at raising the standard of medical education while expanding advanced healthcare services. With more faculty members and new colleges, Odisha will be able to:
- Increase the intake capacity for MBBS students
- Provide specialized training in critical healthcare areas
