Indian Techie Killed by US Police After Allegedly Stabbing Roommate

A 30-year-old Indian Techie professional, Mohammed Nizamuddin from Mahabubnagar in Telangana, was shot dead by police in Santa Clara, California, earlier this month. According to officials, the incident occurred on September 3 when police responded to a 911 emergency call reporting a stabbing inside a residence.

Authorities claimed that Nizamuddin had allegedly attacked his roommate with a knife and was found pinning him down when officers arrived. The roommate had sustained multiple injuries in the altercation. Police officers on the scene engaged in what they described as an “Officer Involved Shooting.” Nizamuddin was transported to a nearby hospital but was later declared dead. Indian Techie roommate survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

Police Statement on the Shooting

The Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) released a statement confirming the sequence of events. “SCPD officers arrived, encountered the suspect, and were involved in an Officer Involved Shooting. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased. The Indian Techie was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for their injuries,” the statement read.

Police further clarified that the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, along with SCPD, has launched a joint investigation into the case. Authorities have stressed that it remains an “active and open investigation,” and more updates will be provided as inquiries progress.

Family Disputes Police Version

Nizamuddin’s family in Telangana has rejected the police narrative, alleging racial discrimination and calling for a thorough and impartial probe into the circumstances leading to his death. They claimed that it was Nizamuddin himself who had called the police seeking help before he was shot.

Indian Techie family described him as a “quiet and religious” person who had pursued a Master’s degree in Computer Science in Florida before moving to California for work at a local tech firm. They emphasized that he had no history of violence and instead had been a victim of discrimination and harassment during his stay in the US.

Allegations of Racial Harassment

Indian Techie family also highlighted a LinkedIn post written by Nizamuddin shortly before his death. In it, he alleged repeated instances of racial hatred, harassment, wage fraud, and wrongful termination from his workplace. He wrote:

“I have been a victim of racial hatred, racial discrimination, racial harassment, torture, wage-fraud, wrongful termination and obstruction of justice. Enough is enough, white supremacy/racist white American mentality has to end.”

Nizamuddin further alleged that he had been subjected to food poisoning, eviction, and ongoing surveillance by a purported detective, which he linked to targeted racial discrimination.

These allegations, according to the family, add weight to their claim that the shooting was not only excessive but also possibly motivated by bias.

Appeal for Government Intervention

In India, Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan met Nizamuddin’s father, Indian Techie(Mohammed Hasnuddin), and assured the family of his support. He has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging him to direct the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General in San Francisco to investigate the matter thoroughly.

Khan has also requested assistance in repatriating Nizamuddin’s mortal remains, which are currently at a Santa Clara hospital awaiting completion of formalities. The family has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for urgent intervention to ensure that justice is pursued and the remains are brought back to India without delay.

Demand for Justice and Transparency

The tragic incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the treatment of immigrants and racial minorities in the United States. While the police continue to defend their actions as necessary under the circumstances, Nizamuddin’s family maintains that the shooting was avoidable and possibly influenced by racial prejudice.

The wave of grief in Mohammed’s family is indescribable. When a son dies, and that too outside the country, you can imagine what they must be going through. His father is pleading, “Send my son’s body to India, send my son to me.” This is the wish of a weeping father and his family.

They have demanded a transparent and independent probe, not only into the shooting but also into Nizamuddin’s past allegations of harassment, workplace exploitation, and discrimination.

As of now, the MEA has not issued an official response. Meanwhile, Nizamuddin’s family and community supporters continue to push for accountability, hoping that his case sheds light on broader concerns of racial discrimination faced by immigrants abroad.
