Just ahead of the upcoming bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has made a major announcement offering free electricity for domestic consumers. Taking to social media platform on Thursday, July 17, Nitish Kumar declared that households in the state would receive up to 125 units of electricity free of cost starting from August 1, 2025. The move is expected to benefit nearly 1.67 crore households across Bihar.

“We have always prioritized providing electricity to every home at affordable rates. Building on that commitment, the state government has now decided that from August 1, 2025 ,effective from the July electricity bill domestic consumers will not have to pay anything for consumption up to 125 units,” the Chief Minister  Nitish Kumar stated in his post.

This decision, which comes just months before the state goes to the polls, is seen as a significant welfare step aimed at easing the financial burden on common households. Nitish Kumar emphasized that this initiative reflects the state government’s continued focus on public welfare and inclusive development.

Nitish Kumar also announced that, over the next three years, the government will install solar power plants either on rooftops or in nearby public spaces. The installations will be carried out with the consent of the consumers, ensuring that residents are fully informed and agreeable before any solar infrastructure is set up.

“We have also decided that, over the next three years, solar power plants will be installed on the rooftops of domestic consumers or in nearby public areas with their consent to ensure they receive the benefits,” the Chief Minister said.

Under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that the state government will cover the entire cost of installing solar power plants for extremely poor families. For other households, financial assistance will be provided to support the installation. He stated that with this initiative, up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy is expected to be generated in the state over the next three years.

“Under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, for extremely poor families, the state will bear the full cost of setting up solar power systems. Others will receive appropriate financial support,” Nitish Kumar said. He emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy and reducing the burden on conventional electricity sources.

This announcement comes as Bihar prepares for Assembly elections later this year. Nitish Kumar, leading the NDA government, is aiming for a fifth consecutive term, and these initiatives are seen as key welfare measures to strengthen public support.
