Kolkata Horror: Woman Gang-Raped by Two Men Following Her Birthday Party

In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across Kolkata, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two of her acquaintances on the pretext of celebrating her birthday. The crime took place in Regent Park, an upscale locality in the southern outskirts of the city, raising serious concerns about women’s safety even in supposedly secure areas.

The Incident Unfolded

The alleged assault occurred on Friday, when the young woman was taken by the two accused, identified as Chandan Malik and a man known only as Deep, to Deep’s flat under the guise of a birthday celebration. According to police sources, the survivor, who hails from Haridevpur, was initially invited to enjoy a meal and celebrate her special day. However, the gathering quickly turned sinister.

“The woman‘s birthday was on Friday. On that occasion, Chandan and Deep took the victim to Deep’s residence. There, they shared a meal and spent time together. Later, when the victim expressed a desire to return home, the accused locked the door and gang-raped her,” a police official disclosed.

The young woman’s nightmare continued until around 10:30 am the following morning when she managed to escape from the flat. She immediately returned home and recounted the traumatic ordeal to her family members, who promptly approached the police. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and a manhunt was launched to apprehend the two accused, who are currently absconding.

Background of the Accused

The two men involved in this heinous crime were not strangers to the victim. According to the survivor’s statement, Chandan introduced himself several months ago as the head of a large Durga Puja committee in South Kolkata. He later connected the woman to Deep, who is reportedly a government employee. The trio maintained contact over time, with the accused allegedly assuring the woman that they would help her get involved in the prestigious Puja committee, thereby enhancing her social and professional prospects.

This calculated manipulation played a critical role in gaining the victim’s trust, ultimately leading to the tragic events of that fateful night. The police confirmed that both Chandan Malik and Deep had gone into hiding following the assault, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest them.

Public Outrage and Growing Safety Concerns

The incident has ignited widespread outrage among the public and activists, particularly in a city long considered one of the safest for women in India. According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Kolkata has consistently reported lower crime rates against women compared to other metropolitan cities.

Yet, this case has raised troubling questions about the real state of safety in the city. Critics argue that despite government assurances and policy frameworks, systemic failures in law enforcement and societal attitudes continue to endanger women.

This case is not isolated. Earlier this year, a law student was allegedly raped on the campus of South Calcutta Law College on June 25. The prime accused in that case, Monojit Mishra, an alumnus of the college and a former unit president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was arrested following the incident. The TMCP subsequently clarified that Mishra had not been associated with the organization for the past two years.

Adding to the grim pattern of violence against women, last year witnessed the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The crime had triggered nationwide protests and demands for stricter laws and better implementation of existing ones. The accused in that case, Sanjay Roy—a former civic police volunteer—was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year.

Following the survivor’s complaint, the Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against Chandan Malik and Deep under various sections of the IPC, including those pertaining to rape and wrongful confinement. Senior officials confirmed that a dedicated team is actively pursuing leads to locate and arrest the accused.

“We are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and urgency. An intensive search operation is underway. Both the accused are declared absconders, and we are coordinating with local and inter-state agencies to ensure their swift arrest,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Additionally, the police are working to examine digital communications between the survivor and the accused to establish a timeline of events and possibly uncover any accomplices. Forensic evidence from the crime scene is also being meticulously collected to strengthen the case.

Support for the Survivor

In the midst of public outrage, several NGOs and women’s rights activists have come forward to offer support to the survivor. Legal aid and psychological counseling are being provided to help her cope with the trauma. Experts emphasize the importance of a sensitive and victim-centric approach to ensure that the survivor receives justice without further emotional harm.

“The system must protect survivors, not re-traumatize them. We are closely monitoring the case and are committed to helping the victim through every step of the legal process,” said a spokesperson from a leading women’s rights organization.

Wider Implications

This disturbing incident once again sheds light on the urgent need for stronger preventive measures, better awareness about the laws, and a more robust system to protect women. It also highlights how predators can manipulate trust and use social connections as a means to commit their crimes.

As the search for Chandan Malik and Deep continues, the entire nation watches closely, demanding swift justice. The case serves as a grim reminder that no place can be considered completely safe until structural reforms and a cultural shift occur in society.

In a city where tradition and modernity often coexist, this brutal crime stands out as a glaring failure of the system designed to safeguard its citizens, especially women.
