K Kavitha Suspended From BRS By Father K Chandrashekar Rao

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has suspended senior party leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLC) K. Kavitha, daughter of party president and former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR). The decision, announced through an official party statement on Monday, cited her repeated acts of “anti-party activity” and remarks that allegedly undermined the party’s unity and discipline.

The statement was issued under the signatures of BRS General Secretary T. Ravinder Rao and Disciplinary Committee member Soma Bharatkumar. It noted that the suspension came directly at the instructions of KCR, who took serious note of Kavitha’s recent comments against fellow party members as well as her public disagreements with the party’s official stance.

Letter Leak and Public Discontent

The suspension marks the culmination of weeks of tension between Kavitha and the party leadership. According to party insiders, the friction began during the BRS silver jubilee celebrations earlier this year. At the time, Kavitha had written a private letter to her father, expressing dissatisfaction with his short two-minute speech at the event.

In the letter, which was later leaked to the media, Kavitha wrote: “As you (KCR) spoke for just two minutes, some people began speculating that there will be a tie-up with the BJP in the future. Even I personally felt that you should have spoken strongly (against the BJP). It might be because I suffered (because of the BJP). But you should have targeted the BJP more, Daddy.”

The leak triggered widespread speculation and internal discord. Kavitha publicly questioned how the letter had been leaked and accused certain party insiders of deliberately sabotaging her. She expressed disappointment that, instead of investigating the breach of privacy, the leadership and senior members had turned their criticism against her.

Escalating Criticism of Party Colleagues

Tensions escalated further in recent days as Kavitha went on record blaming several senior leaders within the BRS for tarnishing her father’s reputation. Addressing the media, she claimed that the allegations of corruption against KCR were the direct result of the actions of those close to him.

Without holding back, she also leveled accusations against her brother K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), the party’s working president, suggesting that his style of leadership had alienated sections of the cadre. In addition, she accused her cousins—former minister T. Harish Rao and former MP J. Santosh Kumar—of amassing disproportionate assets and forging a tacit understanding with current Chief Minister Revnath Reddy.

Her remarks came in the backdrop of the Congress government’s decision to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, one of the flagship schemes of the BRS government. While the BRS leadership has consistently maintained that the CBI probe is nothing more than a “political witch-hunt” by the Congress, Kavitha’s statements appeared to endorse the allegations of corruption, creating an impression of disunity within the party ranks.

Sharp Attack on Other Leaders

Kavitha’s criticism was not limited to her close family members. She also targeted senior party leader and former minister Jagadish Reddy, dismissively calling him a “Lilliput leader.” According to sources, such public ridicule of senior colleagues was viewed as deeply damaging to the party’s image, especially at a time when the BRS is struggling to counter the ruling Congress in Telangana and maintain its political relevance at the national level.

Suspension as a Disciplinary Measure

In its official note, the BRS leadership stated: “The party leadership is taking this matter seriously as the recent behaviour and ongoing anti-party activities of party MLC K. Kavitha are damaging the BRS party. Party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to suspend K. Kavitha from the party with immediate effect.”

Party sources confirmed that KCR personally approved the suspension after consultations with senior functionaries. Though the move comes as a setback to the image of unity within the BRS’s first family, leaders maintained that no individual, regardless of stature, can be allowed to breach party discipline.

A Rift in the BRS’s First Family

The suspension of Kavitha is unprecedented in the history of the BRS, particularly because she is the daughter of the party’s founder and president. Analysts believe it signals not just a personal rift but also deeper fissures within the BRS’s leadership structure.

Once seen as one of the prominent faces of the party, Kavitha had played an important role in mobilizing women and youth during the Telangana statehood movement. However, her political career has faced turbulence in recent years, especially after her defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the Enforcement Directorate’s probe into the Delhi excise policy case in which she has been questioned.

Political observers suggest that her growing public outbursts may have stemmed from frustrations over being sidelined within the party, particularly as her brother KTR and cousin Harish Rao took charge of key organizational responsibilities.

What Lies Ahead

The suspension raises several questions about Kavitha’s future in politics. While she has not yet issued an official response to the decision, her recent statements indicate she may continue to challenge the party leadership openly. Whether she chooses to remain within the BRS and fight her suspension, or chart out an independent political path, remains to be seen.

For the BRS, however, the immediate concern is containing the fallout of suspending one of its most prominent leaders from the first family. As the party attempts to regroup after its electoral setbacks, the leadership faces the difficult task of reassuring the cadre and projecting unity in the face of internal dissent.
