Nimisha Priya case: The last-minute efforts to save Malayali nurse from execution in Yemen

38-year-old Nimisha Priya from India, who is imprisoned in Yemen, Nimisha Priya life is now hanging by a thin thread. Nimisha Priya execution date is fixed for Tuesday, July 16. But can blood money save her life? A petition is going to be heard in the Supreme Court of India today. In which a plea has been made to pay blood money under Yemen’s Sharia law to save Nimisha Priya life.

Will this be the last chance for Nimisha or is the end of her story now decided? Nimisha Priya is a nurse from Kerala’s Pallagarh district who went to Yemen in 2011 in search of a better future. At that time the situation in Yemen was good and Nimisha went there with her husband and daughter. But in 2014, when the situation of civil war arose in Yemen, her husband and daughter returned to India.

she decided to stay in Yemen to support her family financially. But this decision became the biggest turning point of her life. According to Yemeni law, a foreign doctor or nurse has to partner with a local Yemeni citizen to open a clinic. Nimisha Priya partnered with a man named Talal Ab Do Mehndi.

But this partnership soon became a curse for them. The broker allegedly cheated Nimisha Priya. He created fake documents and claimed that he was Nimisha’s husband. Not only this, he also snatched Nimisha’s passport. She was made a victim of physical and financial exploitation and was also repeatedly threatened with death. Nimisha Priya was trapped in this quagmire and there was no way out. In 2017, Nimisha Priya gathered courage and tried to get out of this trap.

They gave Talal a drug to make him unconscious so that he could get his passport back and leave Yemen and return to India. But destiny had something else in store. The amount of the drug was overdosed and Talal died. In panic, Nimisha Priya tried to dispose of his body by cutting it into pieces. This incident made her life more difficult. In 2020, he was sentenced to death and in 2023, the Supreme Judicial Council of the former government of Yemen upheld this sentence.

There is a provision of blood money in Yemen’s Sharia law. In which the punishment can be pardoned by giving compensation to the victim’s family. Nimisha’s family has offered to give 8.6 crores i.e. about $1 million to Talal’s family or say that this amount has been decided. Advocate Subhash Chandran KR has filed a petition in the Supreme Court. In which the Indian government has been requested to intervene in this matter through political channels in Yemen.

But it is not so easy. The jail where Nimisha is imprisoned is under the control of the administration and India has no formal political relationship with the administration.  Will blood money be able to save her life? Or will Nimisha’s hopes be lost amidst the complex political situation and legal complexities of Yemen. This is a big test for the Indian government and the Supreme Court. Nimisha’s daughter and family are praying for her release in India.
