In a heartbreaking incident from Pune, a woman who donated a part of her liver to save her husband’s life tragically died just days after he passed away following a transplant surgery. The incident has raised serious concerns and prompted the Maharashtra health department to issue a notice to the private hospital where the procedures were conducted.
According to officials, Bapu Komkar and his wife Kamini, residents of Pune, underwent surgeries at Sahyadri Hospital on August 15. While the operations were successfully completed, the outcome turned devastating for the family. Bapu’s health began to deteriorate after the surgery, and he passed away on August 17. Four days later, on August 21, Kamini, who had donated part of her liver, also succumbed, reportedly due to an infection that developed after the surgery.
Health Department Steps In
The deaths of both the recipient and the donor within a week of the surgery have alarmed state authorities. Dr. Nagnath Yempalle, Deputy Director of Health Services, confirmed that a formal notice has been issued to Sahyadri Hospital. The hospital has been directed to furnish all relevant details pertaining to the case by 10 a.m. on Monday.
“We have issued a notice to the hospital and sought details of the recipient and the donor, their video recordings, and the line of treatment. The hospital has been asked to furnish all the details without delay,” Dr. Yempalle stated.
The inquiry will focus on the medical procedures followed, the counselling of the donor and family, and the treatment provided post-surgery.
Meanwhile, grief-stricken relatives of the Komkar family have alleged medical negligence and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to both deaths. According to them, there were lapses in the treatment process that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
Family members expressed anger over the lack of accountability and have called for strict action against those responsible if negligence is proven. Their allegations have amplified calls for greater scrutiny of organ transplant procedures in private hospitals.
Hospital Denies Negligence, Issues Statement
Responding to the controversy, Sahyadri Hospital has firmly denied any negligence and maintained that both surgeries were conducted strictly in line with standard medical protocols. In an official statement, the hospital expressed condolences to the Komkar family and assured full cooperation with the ongoing inquiry.
“We are fully cooperating in the investigation. We are committed to providing all necessary information and support to ensure a thorough review of this matter,” the statement said.
The hospital emphasized that Bapu Komkar was a high-risk patient with multiple medical complications even before the surgery. According to doctors, despite all efforts, he developed cardiogenic shock after the transplant and could not be revived.

On the donor’s condition, the hospital said Kamini initially showed positive recovery but later developed septic shock and multi-organ dysfunction, conditions that could not be controlled despite advanced treatment.
“A living donor liver transplant is one of the most complex surgical procedures. In this case, the family and donor were fully counselled in advance about the potential risks involved,” the hospital added.
