Girl Chilling Message to Boyfriend Before Murder: Honour Killing Shocks Gujarat

ling Shocks Gujarat

Late on a June night in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, a young man’s phone buzzed with a message on Instagram. It was from his girlfriend, 18-year-old Chandrika Chaudhary.

“Save me.”

The short, urgent plea from the teenager in Dantia village, Tharad taluka, was unlike anything Harish Chaudhary had ever received from her. Within hours, Chandrika was dead. What her family initially claimed to be a “natural death” would soon unravel into a shocking case of alleged dishonour killing—one that police say was meticulously planned and executed by her own father and uncle.

The Relationship Her Family Opposed

Chandrika and Harish were in a relationship, but her family strongly disapproved. The reason, police say, was that they wanted her to marry someone of their choosing. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suman Nala, the Chaudhary family had made it clear that they would not accept Harish.

Chandrika knew the opposition was not just stubbornness—it was potentially dangerous. She had told Harish that her family might force her into marriage against her will. Message On the night of June 24, she sent him a desperate message:

“Come and get me; otherwise, my family will get me married against my will. If I don’t agree to the marriage, they will kill me. Save me.”

It would be the last time Harish heard from her.

From ‘Natural Death’(Chandrika) to Murder Probe

The next morning, news reached Harish that Chandrika had died at her home. Her family claimed it was due to natural causes. Shocked and unconvinced, Harish approached the police, alleging foul play.

Initially, there was little to suggest otherwise. No post-mortem was conducted. The family had cremated her body in haste, without consulting a doctor or informing close relatives—including her brother, who was away studying in Palanpur.

ASP Nala said these irregularities raised immediate suspicion.

“Even in cases of natural death, families consult a doctor. Here, no doctor was called, the cremation was rushed, and close relatives were not informed. This indicated an attempt to conceal the truth.”

Harish also filed a habeas corpus petition in court, but before it could be heard, Chandrika had already died. Refusing to accept the family’s explanation, he wrote to police demanding a full investigation.

A Chilling Plan

Police soon uncovered what they describe as a cold and calculated plan by Chandrika’s father, Sedhabhai Patel, and her uncle, Shivabhai Patel.

Days before the murder, Chandrika had run away with Harish, hoping to escape her family’s control. But after her family lodged a missing person complaint, police found the couple and sent Chandrika back home.

According to investigators, this was when her fate was sealed. On June 24 night, the father and uncle allegedly decided that if Chandrika did not agree to the arranged marriage, she would be killed.

Their plan had three steps:

  1. Drugging: First, they allegedly gave her sedatives to make her fall asleep.
  2. Strangulation: Once unconscious, she was strangled to death.
  3. Staging the Scene: To avoid suspicion, they hung her body to make it appear as if she had committed suicide.

At night, neighbours who saw her body believed she had taken her own life. But by morning, the family changed their narrative, telling others she had died naturally—completely omitting any mention of suicide.

Technical and Circumstantial Evidence

During the investigation, police relied on a combination of technical analysis, circumstantial evidence, and conflicting witness statements. The inconsistencies in the family’s accounts, the rushed cremation, and the absence of any medical consultation all pointed toward deliberate concealment.

The investigation concluded that Chandrika’s death was not only unnatural but also staged to look like something it wasn’t. A murder case was registered at the Tharad police station.

Two people, including Shivabhai Patel, were arrested. The primary accused—her father, Sedhabhai Patel—remains on the run.

This case adds to a troubling pattern seen across India, particularly in rural areas, where “honour killings” are carried out by families against members—often women—who defy traditional norms in choosing their partners.

According to activists, these crimes stem from deep-seated beliefs about caste, community, and family reputation. In many instances, the victims are young women who choose to marry or have relationships against their family’s wishes.

The methods are often brutal, and the perpetrators frequently include close relatives, making detection and prosecution challenging.

By all accounts, Chandrika was a determined young woman who wanted the freedom to choose her future. Friends describe her as cheerful but increasingly anxious in the days leading up to her death.

Her last message to Harish is now seen as a haunting prediction of her fate. She had sensed danger but was powerless to stop it without outside help.

Legal Proceedings Ahead

As police continue to search for Chandrika’s father, the case will move toward trial for the arrested accused. Investigators believe the technical evidence—combined with witness testimonies—will be strong enough to secure convictions.

ASP Nala has stressed that the Banaskantha police are committed to ensuring justice.

“This was a planned and staged murder. We will ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.

Despite the arrests, questions remain. Could Chandrika’s death have been prevented if her initial plea for help had been acted upon more urgently? Could a stronger support system for women facing forced marriage have made a difference?

For Harish, the loss is deeply personal. What began as a night of worry over a message from his girlfriend ended with the devastating confirmation that her fears had come true.

Chandrika’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by women in conservative family structures when their choices clash with societal norms. It also highlights the urgent need for better legal and social mechanisms to protect individuals—especially women—seeking to escape forced marriages or threats from their own families.

In the quiet village of Dantia, life has returned to its routine, but for those who knew Chandrika, the silence carries the weight of unanswered questions and unfulfilled dreams.

As the search for her father continues, one truth remains: an 18-year-old’s cry for help went unheard, and the cost was her life.
