A popular Delhi-based restaurant, Tubata, has found itself in the middle of a social media storm after a couple alleged they were denied entry for wearing traditional Indian attire. The incident took place on August 3 at Tubata, a lounge located near the Pitampura metro station, and has since sparked nationwide outrage and a wider debate around cultural identity and dress codes in private establishments.

The Incident
According to the couple, who posted a video that (Couple Alleges Delhi Restaurant) has now gone viral, they were stopped at the entrance of the restaurant because of what they were wearing. In the video, the woman is seen dressed in a traditional churidaar-kurta set, while her partner is wearing a T-shirt and pants. Despite being dressed decently, the couple claimed they were denied entry on the grounds of violating the restaurant’s “dress code.”
“This was our dress, but they stopped us,” the woman said in the clip. “Others in skimpier clothes were allowed in. The manager misbehaved with us and insulted Indian culture.” The man recording the video can also be heard saying, “Is wearing Indian clothes against our culture? Are their clothes inappropriate? Such restaurants should be shut down if they are against Indian traditions.”
The video was first shared on (formerly Twitter) by a user named Rosy, who wrote: “See what is happening in Delhi restaurant Tubata in Pitampura. A couple was denied entry just because they were wearing Indian attire!”

As the video gained traction, it evoked strong emotions and sharply divided opinions across social media platforms. While a large section of netizens slammed the restaurant’s actions as discriminatory and disrespectful toward Indian culture, others defended the establishment’s right to enforce a dress code.
Critics questioned the double standards often seen in urban hospitality spaces. “We are aliens in our own country,” one user wrote, reflecting the frustration many Indians feel when local traditions are sidelined in favor of Western norms. Another user commented: “It’s 2025, and Indian attire is still being looked down upon in our own land. Shameful.”
However, not everyone agreed. Some X users argued that as a private business, Tubata had the right to impose dress codes and control access to its premises. One user wrote: “We need to stop making an issue out of everything and grow up. That’s a private restaurant and they have every right to decide who enters and what they’re wearing. It’s not public property.”
Another added, “If this happened abroad, we’d call it racism. Here, it’s just a dress code policy. Self-hate is the ugliest fashion trend.”
Several users also shared personal experiences, citing incidents where they were denied entry to other venues for not adhering to specific dress codes. “I was denied entry to a pub in Bengaluru once because I wasn’t wearing formals. No point fighting it. Just know the dress codes beforehand,” one person noted.
Political Response
The viral video (Couple Alleges Delhi Restaurant) did not go unnoticed by authorities. Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra addressed the matter while speaking to news agency PTI. He confirmed that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had taken cognisance of the incident and instructed a formal inquiry.
“A video surfaced showing a couple being denied entry to a restaurant near Pitampura Metro Station. According to the video, the Couple entry was denied because the woman was wearing Indian attire. The restaurant reportedly had a policy of not allowing people in Indian attire,”.

He added that the District Magistrate and a municipal officer spoke to the restaurant’s management. “The restaurant owner has now confirmed that such a policy will no longer be followed,” Mishra confirmed, suggesting that the backlash had led to a policy reversal at Tubata.
Cultural Clash or Business Right?
The controversy has reignited the ongoing debate about the clash between cultural identity and modern hospitality trends in urban India. While establishments often use dress codes to maintain a certain ambiance or branding, critics argue that enforcing rules that effectively marginalize traditional Indian wear in India is both ironic and insensitive.
Legal experts also weighed in, pointing out that while private businesses have the right to enforce reasonable policies, those rules cannot contravene constitutional values or promote discrimination. “A ‘Right to Admission Reserved’ board is not a license for arbitrary or culturally biased exclusion,” one lawyer stated in an interview with a local news outlet.

A Wake-Up Call for Hospitality Sector?
This incident (Couple Alleges Delhi Restaurant) has exposed the complex interplay of modernity, culture, and consumer rights in India’s rapidly evolving social landscape. It raises an important question: In a country where traditional clothing is a symbol of heritage and pride, should it ever be grounds for exclusion?
As the video continues to spark heated discussions, it serves as a reminder that businesses — particularly those in hospitality — must tread carefully when setting policies. Cultural sensitivity, customer dignity, and the broader message such policies send to the public are all part of the larger conversation that cannot be ignored in today’s hyper-connected world.
