Dalai Lama’s Message
I am aware that friends and well-wishers from all over the world, especially Tibetan groups, are getting together to celebrate my 90th birthday. I especially value the fact that many of you are taking advantage of this opportunity to participate in activities that emphasize the value of kindness, generosity, and compassion.
Being a simple Buddhist monk, I don’t typically celebrate birthdays. But because you are planning birthday-related activities, I would like to express my opinions.
While striving for worldly advancement is crucial, it’s even more important to concentrate on finding peace of mind by developing a healthy heart and showing compassion—not just to those close to you, but to everyone. You will help to improve the world by doing this.
For my part, I will keep concentrating on my duties to advance religious harmony, human values, and the ancient Indian wisdom that explains how the mind and emotions function, as well as Tibetan culture and heritage, which has a great deal to offer the world by emphasizing compassion and peace of mind.
The teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters like Shantideva give me courage and resolve in my day-to-day existence, and I try to live up to their aspirations.
As long as space endures,
As long as sentient being remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.
Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion.
The Rebirth of a Soul in a New Body
The Dalai Lama confirmed that his office had the “sole authority” to acknowledge his future reincarnation and declared that he will have a successor after his death in a video address to religious elders on Wednesday.
In his recorded message, the Dalai Lama stated, “No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter.”
The declaration lays the groundwork for a conflict between exiled Tibetan Buddhist leaders and China’s atheist Communist Party, which maintains that only Beijing has the power to choose the next Dalai Lama.
Many Tibetan Buddhists applauded the Dalai Lama’s declaration since they had been waiting for him to decide if the centuries-old institution would cease with his passing. He had previously stated that he would reevaluate the matter around the time of his 90th birthday.
Tenzin Nyidon, a 26-year-old native of Odisha, eastern India, spoke from the audience and told CNN that she respects his rebirth “with deep respect.” She also expressed concern about China’s “attempts to politicize” this procedure.
Tibetan Buddhists believe in the circle of rebirth, and that when an enlightened spiritual master like the Dalai Lama dies, he will be able to choose the place and time of his rebirth through the force of compassion and prayer.
