The case first came to light on August 11, when police in Mainpuri district discovered the body of an unidentified woman near Karpari village. Investigators noted visible strangulation marks on her neck, strongly indicating murder. A post-mortem confirmed the suspicion.
With no immediate identification, police reached out to several stations across Uttar Pradesh to match the missing person’s profile. The woman was eventually identified as a resident of Farrukhabad, reported missing by her family. This led investigators to focus on her recent contacts, ultimately tracing the accused, Arun Rajput, a 26-year-old local resident.
Instagram Friendship Turns Fatal
Mainpuri Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Singh revealed that the victim and the accused first became acquainted through Instagram nearly 18 months ago. Their online friendship gradually deepened, and about two months ago, the pair exchanged phone numbers. Regular calls and meetings followed, giving rise to a closer relationship.
According to police, the woman often traveled to meet Rajput, including her last visit on August 11, when she journeyed from Farrukhabad to Mainpuri. On this visit, she reportedly brought up two issues: her desire for marriage and repayment of the ₹1.5 lakh loan she had extended to him.
“During interrogation, the accused confessed that the woman had been pressing him for marriage and asking for her money back. On the day of the incident, she once again raised these topics, which angered him. In a fit of rage, he strangled her with the dupatta she was wearing,” Singh said.
Disposal of Evidence
After committing the crime, Rajput allegedly attempted to conceal his tracks. He removed the SIM card from the woman’s phone, took the device with him, and tried to erase evidence of their conversations. Police, however, recovered both phones and retrieved the digital communications exchanged between the two. These records, officials said, corroborated Rajput’s confession and established the nature of their relationship.
Rajput has since been arrested and charged with murder.
Age and Deception a Factor
While the immediate motive appeared to be financial and marital pressure, the accused also cited the victim’s age as a reason for refusing marriage. According to police, Rajput told interrogators that the woman used Instagram filters to present herself as younger online.
“When he met her in person for the first time, he realized her actual age. He was also aware that she was married earlier and had four children. These factors made him unwilling to commit to marriage,” Superintendent Singh explained.

The murder has left both Mainpuri and Farrukhabad communities shaken. Neighbors of the victim described her as a devoted mother who had been struggling financially but maintained an active social media presence. While her family has refrained from public statements during the ongoing investigation, locals expressed disbelief that a relationship cultivated online could end in such violence.
The case also highlights a growing concern about the blurred lines between online personas and real-world relationships. Social media platforms, particularly Instagram, often allow users to project filtered or altered images of themselves. While many use such tools casually, in some cases, they create expectations or deceptions that strain personal interactions.
Police officials noted that while the victim’s use of filters may have contributed to Rajput’s hesitation, it in no way justified the crime. “No matter the circumstances, the act of taking someone’s life cannot be excused. This was a cold-blooded murder,” one officer remarked.

Police confirmed that the woman had loaned Rajput around ₹1.5 lakh, though the exact circumstances of the transaction remain under investigation. When asked, Superintendent Singh emphasized that financial disputes often play a role in such cases. “The victim had been demanding her money back for some time. On the day of the incident, this became a flashpoint,” he said.

With Rajput in custody, police are preparing the chargesheet. He is expected to face trial under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty, depending on the court’s judgment.
