4 Students Rent Helicopter to Reach Uttarakhand Exam Centre

In an inspiring story of determination and innovation, four students from Balotra in Rajasthan found themselves facing an unprecedented challenge while trying to appear for their final semester B.Ed. exam in Uttarakhand. With heavy rains and landslides disrupting road connectivity, the students turned to an extraordinary solution: they flew by helicopter to reach their exam center and returned safely the same day.

A Critical Exam Amidst Natural Disasters

Omaram Choudhary, Magaram Choudhary, Prakash Choudhary, and Lucky Choudhary – all pursuing their Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree through correspondence from Uttarakhand Open University – were scheduled to appear for their final semester exam on September 3 at RS Tolia PG College in Munsiyari, Uttarakhand. As teachers working in various government schools as third-grade teachers, they had been preparing diligently for this important milestone, which would pave the way for better career opportunities.

However, as fate would have it, heavy monsoon rains and subsequent landslides had damaged and blocked crucial road connections, including the Haldwani-Pithoragarh and Tanakpur-Pithoragarh routes. Though the students managed to reach Haldwani by road, the further journey towards Munsiyari became impossible by conventional means. Taxi drivers refused to take them forward, citing the road closures and dangerous conditions. With the exam date fast approaching, missing it would mean losing an entire year of hard work.

The Innovative Idea: Reaching by Air

Faced with this grim situation, the students brainstormed alternative options. Learning about a helicopter service operating in the region, they reached out to Heritage Aviation. The students explained their predicament, emphasizing the critical importance of appearing for the exam. Moved by their dedication, the CEO of Heritage Aviation agreed to make special arrangements.

A helicopter was dispatched with two skilled pilots to carry the students from Haldwani to Munsiyari. The distance between Haldwani and Munsiyari is approximately 280 kilometers by road, typically requiring about 10 hours of travel under normal conditions. With landslides blocking the roads, this journey would have been impossible at that time. In contrast, the helicopter covered the distance in just 25 to 30 minutes, proving to be a life-saving decision for the students.

An Expensive but Worthwhile Investment

Each student bore an expense of around Rs 5,200 for a one-way trip, making it a total of Rs 10,400 per person for the round trip. Though the cost was significant for these third-grade teachers, they considered it a worthwhile investment, given that missing the exam would have delayed their educational progress by an entire year.

Omaram Choudhary expressed his relief, saying, “Initially, we were very disheartened when we saw the road conditions and feared we would not be able to reach our exam center. Missing the exam would have been a huge setback in our academic and professional life. Thanks to the helicopter service, we managed to reach safely and appeared for our exam.”

Magaram Choudhary added with enthusiasm, “The helicopter journey was not only a unique experience but also deeply fulfilling. We were initially very worried about losing a year, but this service came as a blessing. Finally, we completed our final semester exam without any further hurdles.”

Commitment Amidst Adversity

The four students are emblematic of dedication and resilience. Balancing their teaching jobs and B.Ed. studies through correspondence is a challenge in itself, especially under difficult circumstances like this. Their story highlights the importance of determination and creative problem-solving when faced with unexpected obstacles.

Prakash Choudhary shared, “We had no other option but to think differently. Our priority was clear – we had to reach the exam center. With roads blocked and no taxis willing to go, the helicopter option seemed risky but ultimately turned out to be the perfect solution.”

Lucky Choudhary said, “It was an unforgettable experience. The flight over the mountainous terrain during monsoon was beautiful yet nerve-wracking. But once we landed safely and took the exam, all our fears disappeared. We were grateful for the support we received.”

A Rare Solution to a Common Problem

While such helicopter services are not typically used for exam travel, this case underlines the importance of flexible and creative solutions in extreme situations. Helicopter services are often seen as expensive and exclusive, but for these students, it became a gateway to continue their education and avoid a year-long delay.

Heritage Aviation, known for its timely and safe air services in the region, responded positively to the students’ appeal. The pilots involved displayed exceptional professionalism by flying in difficult weather conditions, ensuring the students’ safety and punctuality.

Inspiring a New Narrative

This inspiring story is a testament to the lengths to which determined students are willing to go to achieve their dreams. In a time when education is often hindered by infrastructural or natural challenges, such innovative approaches may serve as examples for others in similar predicaments.

As more areas of India face monsoonal disruptions, this case could encourage regional administrations and educational institutions to develop contingency plans for students appearing for crucial exams. It also calls attention to the need for improved infrastructure and alternative travel options in remote and difficult terrains.

For now, Omaram, Magaram, Prakash, and Lucky have successfully appeared for their final semester exam, thanks to their perseverance and the timely help of Heritage Aviation. Their story continues to inspire many students and professionals, demonstrating that when determination meets innovation, no hurdle is insurmountable.
